국문 초록

이 글은 보에티우스의 “음악의 원리(1권 1장)”에서 진술된 “음악과 인성의 관계”에 대해 살피려는 데에 목적을 두었다. 로마제국의 뛰어난 정치가이자 철학자로서 잘 알려져 있는 그가 의외로 ‘음악이론서’도 집필했다. 비록 최초의 것은 아니지만 기념비적인 고전이다. 고대 그리스의 음악이론가들(피타고라스, 플라톤, 게라사의 니코마코스, 프톨레마이오스 등)의 견해들을 회상하면서 음악의 기본적인 개념 및 중세 교회에 발전하는 그레고리안 선법에 대해서도 전해준다. 본 논문은 그 가운데 ‘음악과 세상 및 인간과의 관련성’에 주목했다. 음악이 인간의 삶에 어떤 영향을 미치는지, 또 어째서 어떤 음악은 듣고 기뻐하며, 또 어떤 음악은 그로 인해 인간의 습성이나 행동을 추락시키는 일이 벌어지는지 알아보려고 했다. 그는 “음악은 진리를 탐구하는 인식행위만이 아니라 우리의 마음을 다스리는 도덕성과도 직결되어 있다.”고 적고 있다. 우리가 ‘선하게 산다’는 것은 어떻게 가능한 것일까? 선함, 좋음, 아름다움, 그 모든 것은 “닮음”에 기초한다. 그로부터 조화로움(하모니)이 발전한다. 정치가이기도 한 보에티우스에게 모든 인간은 물론 한 나라의 흥망성쇠를 좌우할 수 있는 ‘음악’에 대한 관심은 남달랐다고 볼 수 있다. 그래서 피타고라스에서 시작하여 세상만물(우주)의 수적인 비례와 좌우대칭(심메트리)에 의한 ‘균형과 아름다움’을 음악의 하모니(조화)와 같은 맥락에서 해석한 플라톤의 통찰, 예컨대 “음악적인 조화가 세상만물의 영혼을 하나로 결합시켰다.”는 그의 가르침은 매우 소중했다. 그래서 그는 또 다시 플라톤의 가르침을 기억한다. “따라서 플라톤 역시 음악이 좋게 길들어진 습관에서 벗어나게 하는 일이 없도록 최대한 경계할 것에 주의를 환기시켰다. 왜냐하면 그는 한 나라 안에서 신중하고 정숙한 음악으로부터 점차 퇴락해가는 것보다 더 큰 풍속의 추락을 초래할 수 없다고 보았기 때문이다.” 이 글은 그 이유를 조금은 더 더듬어보고자 했다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this article was to examine the relationship between music and Personality stated in Boethius De institutione musica (libro I, c. 1). Known as a prominent politician and philosopher of the Roman Empire, he also unexpectedly wrote the Books of Music Theory. It s a monumental classic, though not the first. Recalling the views of ancient Greek music scholars(Pythagoras, Plato, Nicomachos of Gerasa, Claudios Ptolemyos, etc.), it also conveys the basic concepts of music and the Gregorian selection method that develops in medieval churches. This article noted among them the relationship between music and the world and human beings . I tried to find out how music affects human life, and why some music is happy to hear, and some music is causing human habits and behaviors to fall. He writes, Music is not only directly related to the act of perception that explores truth, but also to the morality that governs our minds. How is it possible for us to live good ? Goodness, goodness, beauty, all that is based on similarity. Harmony develops from that. For Boethius, who is also a politician, the interest in music, which can determine the rise and fall of not only all humans but also a country, was extraordinary. So Plato s insight, for example, that music harmony combined the souls of all things in the world into one (Timaios 37a), which began in Pythagoras and interpreted balance and beauty by the numerical proportion of all things (the universe) and the symmetry in the same context as the harmony of music. So he remembers Plato s teachings again. So Plato also called attention to being as vigilant as possible so that music doesn t get out of its well-tamed habits. Because he saw within a country that he could not cause a fall of greater wind speed than gradually degenerating from careful and chaste music. This article was intended to give a little more thought to the reason.
