산업특성이 경영자능력과 장·단기성과 간 관계에 미치는 영향

국문 초록

본 연구는 경영자의 능력이 기업성과를 높인다는 기존의 연구를 확장하여 소속된 산업의 특성에 따라 경영자능력이 기업성과에 미치는 영향이 차별적인지 실증분석한다. 경영자능력은 Dermerjian et al.(2012)의 추정치를 이용하고 산업의 특성은 성장, 경쟁, 첨단산업으로 구분하여, 2006년부터 2015년까지 유가증권상장기업을 대상으로 실증분석하였다. 실증연구방법은 기업별 클러스트링후, 경영자능력과 기업의 장·단기성과 간 관계가 산업특성에 따라 차이를 보이는지에 대해 Pooled OLS 회귀분석한다. 실증분석결과, 첫째 성장산업의 경우 기업의 장·단기성과가 높아지는 관계에서 경영자의 능력여부가 추가적으로 성과를 높이는 효과는 발견되지 않았다. 둘째, 경쟁강도가 높은 산업에서는 경영자의 능력이 높을수록 장·단기성과를 더 높이는 것으로 확인되어, 경쟁이 높은 상황에서 경영자의 능력이 기업성과를 높이는데 중요한 역할을 한다는 것을 발견하였다. 셋째, 첨단산업에 속한 기업은 경영자의 능력이 장기성과를 추가적으로 증가시키는 관계는 발견되지 않은 반면. 추가적으로 단기성과를 높이는 데 기여하는 것으로 확인되었다. 본 연구의 결과는 경영자의 능력이 기업성과를 높이는 것으로 알려진 기존의 연구결과가 산업특성에 따라 차별적으로 나타날 수 있음을 추가적으로 확인하였다는 점에서 의미가 있다. 경제성장이 둔화되고 점점 경쟁이 치열해지는 상황 속에서 특별히 경영자의 능력이 기업의 장단기 성과를 높이는데 중요한 역할을 한다는 본 연구결과는 지속경영으로 가기 위한 하나의 방안을 제시해준다. 특히 급변하는 기술변화 속에서 생존해야만 하는 첨단산업의 경우 경영자의 능력이 더욱 중요한 요소임을 확인하였다는 점에서 학계, 업계 및 정책당국에 시사하는 바가 크다. 다만, 단기성과로 평가받는 대리인으로서의 경영자가 그 능력을 단기성과에 집중하는 본 연구결과는 향후 지속경영으로 가기 위한 근간으로 경영자가 능력을 장기성과에 보다 집중할 수 있도록 제도적, 시스템적 변화가 요구됨을 말해준다.

영문 초록

This study examines a moderating effect of industrial characteristics on the relationship between management ability and firm performance, which extends prior study results that management ability increases performance. We employ a proxy of management ability following Dermerjian et al.(2012) and consider growing, competitive, and RnD industry to test those relationships using listed firms from 2006 to 2015. Pooled OLS regression is applied on empirical study after firm-clustering. First, there is no incremental effect of management ability on increasing firm performance when the firm is belongs to growing industry. Second, management ability increases both short and long term performances as the firm is under competitive industry. This confirms that management ability is shown much better under highly competitive circumstances. Third, management ability incrementally boosts short-term performance up in RnD industry. Our study reports that a positive relationship between management ability and firm performance is differenciated by industrial characteristics. This suggests that management ability can be demonstrated expecially when they meet severe competition. This result confirms that management ability is an important factor in particular Rnd industry that survival is an issue under rapid changes in technology rather than making profits. This also suggests that social system needs to be changed in order for management to focus on long-term performance.
