국문 초록

본 연구는 경영자가 연구개발투자 의사결정을 함에 있어서 기업특성에 따라 장기성과를 얻기 위한 연구개발투자 의사결정을 하는지 혹은 단기성과를 얻기 위한 연구개발투자 의사결정을 하는지를 검증함을 목적으로 한다. 즉 경영자가 연구개발투자 의사결정을 함에 있어서 경영자의 사적편익추구 혹은 특정 기업의 상황에 따라 단기간 내에 성과를 얻을 수 있는 연구개발투자안에만 투자를 하는지, 아니면 기업의 지속적이고 장기적인 성장을 위하여 장기간 후에야 성과를 얻을 수 있는 연구개발투자안에도 투자를 하는지를 살펴보고자 한다. 장기 혹은 단기성과를 얻기 위한 연구개발투자안 선택은 기업의 소유구조, 경영성과 및 재무구조, 산업 특성 등에 따라 달라질 수 있다. 따라서 본 연구는 이들 특성에 따라 기업이 장기성과 혹은 단기성과를 얻을 수 있는 어떠한 연구개발투자안을 선택하는가를 살펴보고자 한다. 연구결과 기업 특성에 따라 선택하는 연구개발투자안이 달라지는 것으로 나타났다. 첫째, 소유구조 측면에서 경영자 지분율이 높은 소유경영인 기업은 전문경영인 기업보다 장기성과를 얻을 수 있는 연구개발투자안을 선택하는 것으로 나타났으며, 외국인 주주의 지분율이 높은 기업은 그렇지 않은 기업보다 단기성과 뿐만 아니라 장기성과를 고려한 연구개발투자안을 선택하는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 경영성과 및 재무구조 측면에서 이익 규모가 크거나, 여유현금규모가 큰 기업, 그리고 대기업 등은 단기성과 뿐만 아니라 장기성과도 얻을 수 있는 투자안을 선택하는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 산업 특성별로는 High Tech 산업이 Low Tech 산업보다 장기성과 연구개발투자안을 선택하는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 이제까지의 선행연구와는 달리 기업의 특성에 따라 연구개발투자 의사결정을 함에 있어서 장기 혹은 단기 투자효과에 차이가 있음을 검증하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 이는 기업의 연구개발투자 의사결정 정보의 투자효과를 예상하고 판단함에 있어서 기업의 특성이 반영된다는 점 등을 제공함으로써 투자자들이 의사결정을 함에 있어서 유용한 정보를 제공할 것으로 기대된다.

영문 초록

R&D is important for a company’s survival and prosperity, in terms of increased sales and operating income, and providing good signals for investors in the marketplace. A sound R&D policy can act to position a company if the forefront of its field. A company has to invest R&D consistently and prudently considering short-term performance and long-term portfolio to retain its competitive advantage in an economic environment that can be volatile and undergo rapid change. This study investigated whether a company’s characteristics affect decisions concerning Research and Development(R&D) investment intended for short-term or long-term performance. According to the ownership structure, the patterns of decisions on R&D expenditure were significantly different. There was a tendency that Agent-managed companies decided to invest R&D expenditure to short-term performance, but Owner-managed companies decided to get the performance relatively later than that of Agent-managed. The effects of R&D expenditure were different according to the earnings-size. The companies with larger earnings-size chose the R&D investment for short-term and long-term performance. However, there was no significance effect in the companies with small earning-size. The type of industry also affected the pattern of the decision making of the R&D investment. Low-tech industries pursued the short-term performance. High-tech industries usually invested the R&D expenditure to the area which shows the result of investment for a long time after. The characteristics of the company; ownership structure, financial condition and the type of industry, affected the tendency of the investment. These findings were different from previous other studies. The results of this study suggest that the investors should consider the characteristics of the company when they had to make a decision about R&D investment.
