1970년대 전반기 한·일 대중음악의 록 음악 수용양상과 그 의미에 관한 고찰

국문 초록

록 음악은 1950년대에 로큰롤 음악으로 시작되어 1960년대를 거치며 성장하다가 1970년대에 들어서 세계 대중음악 시장에서 주류 장르중 하나로 자리매김했다. 이러한 문화적 영향은 한국과 일본의 음악문화에도 영향을 지속적으로 주고 있었으며, 양국의 당시 음악들을 통해 그 영향을 확인할 수 있다. 한국과 일본은 1945년 해방을 기점으로 1998년 일본문화개방이 있기까지 문화적으로 단절되어 있었다. 하지만 부분적, 단기적, 음성적 교류는 끊임없이 있어왔으며 양국은 서로 문화적 영향을 주고 받아왔다. 이 연구는 단기적, 부분적 교류가 상대적으로 적었던 시기인 1970년대의 한·일 음악, 그중에서도 록 음악의 비교·고찰을 통해 당시 양국의 문화적 차이를 조망해 보고자 하였다. 한국과 일본의 록 음악은 음악적으로 두가지면에서 큰 차이를 보이고 있었다. 1) 선법의 사용에서 양국의 음악이 차이를 보였는데 한국에 비해 일본의 록 음악이 보다 다양한 선법을 사용하는 경향이 있었다. 2) 기타 음향상에서 나타난 한국과 일본의 록 음악의 확연한 차이가 발견되었는데, 이는 당시로서는 새로운 기법이었던 오버드라이브 기타 사운드의 사용 빈도였다. 양국의 분석대상 곡들은 정반대의 결과를 보여주었다. 한국의 경우 오버드라이브 기타 사운드가 거의 사용되지 않았고 일본의 경우 사용되지 않은 경우를 찾기 힘들었다. 기타가 주요 사운드로 역할을 하는 록 음악의 특성상 이러한 차이는 양국의 음악적 차이를 가장 잘 보여주는 사례이다. 이러한 한·일 양국의 록 음악 수용양상의 차이는 양국의 음악인들이 기존 대중음악에서 벗어나 ‘록’이라는 신장르를 개척함에 있어 ‘보수성’과 어떻게 타협하였는가를 보여주고 있다고 정리될 수 있다. 일본의 록 음악은 동시대 영미권의 록 음악을 적극 수용하였고, 작,편곡적인 면에 있어서도 영미권의 록 음악을 충실히 재현하는 방향으로 전개되었다. 이런 현상은 영미권의 록 음악을 받아들이려 하는 당시 대중의 요구가 전제되어 있었기 때문이었다고 볼 수 있다. 반면 한국의 록 음악은 새로운 음악을 받아들이는 것에 있어 보수적이었다. 이는 당시 한국 대중음악계의 보수적 성향이 투영된 결과로 볼 수 있으며, 정치적, 경제적인 요인의 영향에도 그 원인을 찾을 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

Beginning in the 1950’s, rock music grew in the 60’s and set its roots as the main genre of music in the global pop music industry in the 70’s. Such cultural influences have continued to affect the music cultures in Korea and Japan, which can be further seen through both countries’ songs from the time. Partial, short termed and sound focused exchanges have been constant between the two countries in their sharing of cultures. This study looks to observe and analyze the cultural differences between Korea and Japan through a comparison of their music specifically in the rock genre. Korean and Japanese rock music largely showed notable differences in two musical aspects. First, both countries’ music had differences in the modes used in that Japanese rock used a wider variety of modes than Korean equivalents. Second, there were notable differences in the arrangement of songs between the two countries’ songs, which can be attributed to the overdrive guitar sound a new technique for the era and its usage. The results showed completely opposite data in that Korean songs used the overdrive guitar sound seldomly, while nearly all Japanese songs made use of the effect. Based on the characteristics of the guitar and the amount of importance the guitar has to the rock sound, such differences represent the musical differences between both countries very well. Such differences in the acceptance of rock music in Korea and Japan can best represent how musicians in both countries made peace with ‘conservatism’ when it came to deviating from the present popular music and establishing the new genre of ‘rock’. Japanese rock readily accepted rock music as exported by western countries, recreating their style in composition and arrangement perfectly. Such a phenomenon can be seen as attributable to the general populace in Japan at the time, which was ready to accept the new genre of music introduced by the west. On the other hand, Korea was conservative in its acceptance of new music such as rock. This can be seen as the result of the conservatism within Korean popular music at the time, further attributable to political and economic circumstances.
