소설과 뮤지컬 『노트르담 드 파리』의 문화 재매개 연구

국문 초록

‘재매개’란, 이전부터 전해져 내려오던 것을 ‘다시’ 전한다는 것을 의미한다. 즉, 한 미디어에 담긴 콘텐츠를 원래 미디어로부터 분리하여 다른 미디어에 맞게 담아내는 과정이라고 볼 수 있다. 본고는 기술발달을 전제로 레빈슨이나 볼터, 그루신이 발전시킨 재매개 이론에 더해 그 개념을 보다 더 넓은 미디어 영역으로 확대해서 응용했다. 이미 많은 미디어 학자들이 정의했듯, 메시지가 전달될 수 있는 모든 형태의 매체를 미디어라고 산정하기로 한다. 재매개를 활용한 노력은 고전의 소중한 가치를 다시 일깨우고 그것을 누구나 쉽게 향유할 수 있게 한다. 카톨릭의 시대, 문맹의 시대에 성경의 메시지를 전달하는 수많은 이미지들을 통해서, 파리의 노트르담 대성당은 분명 그 자체로 신자들에게 하나님의 말씀을 전하는 성경이었다. 그리고 위고의 소설은 혁명기에 구시대의 유물로 전락하여 음식창고로나 쓰이던 대성당을 역사적 시간의 구속에서 해방시키면서 동시대인들에게 그 가치를 재인식시켰다. 그리고 다시 그의 소설이 옛이야기로 치부되려는 때에 공연예술의 재매개가, 약 2세기 전의 소설에 보다 쉽고 친숙하게 다가 갈 수 있는 방향을 대중에게 제시했다. 위고의 장편소설은 긴 호흡의 독서 능력이 없다면 향유하기 힘든 작품이지만, 주제에 맞는 멜로디와 가사, 그리고 호소력 있는 무희들의 동작으로, 뮤지컬 장르는 더 많은 대중에게 고전작품을 느끼고 경험할 수 있게 해준다. 이것이 비단 고전의 접근성을 낮추는 정도로 해석되어서는 안 된다. 문화의 재매개는, 고전이 현대성이라는 새로운 옷을 입음으로써 현대적인 방법과 감성으로 고전을 읽는 법을 새로이 제시하는 진보적인 움직임이 될 수 있다. 즉, 고전의 재매개를 통해 새로운 가치와 예술을 창조해내는 것은 예술의 미래라고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Remediation means to convey again what has been passed down from before. In other words, it can be seen as a process of separating the content contained in one media from the original media and containing it to fit the other media. In addition to the remediation theory developed by Levinson, Bolter, and Grusin, this paper expanded and applied the concept to a wider media field on the premise of technological development. As many media scholars have already noted, all types of media through which a message can be delivered are considered as media. Efforts using remediation reawaken the precious value of classics and make it easy for anyone to enjoy. Through the numerous images that convey the message of the Bible in the times of Catholicism and illiteracy, the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris was, in itself, a Bible that conveys the word of God to believers. In addition, Hugo s novels were re-recognized by contemporaries by liberating the cathedral, which had been used as a food warehouse, as a relic of the old era in the revolutionary period from the constraints of historical time. And when his novels were about to be dismissed as old stories, the remediation of performing arts suggested to the public a way to approach the novels from about two centuries ago more easily and in a familiar way. Hugo s feature novels are difficult to enjoy without long-breathing reading ability, but with the melody and lyrics that fit the theme, and the movements of appealing dancers, the musical genre allows a wider audience to feel and experience classics. This should not be interpreted to the extent that it lowers the accessibility of the classics. The remediation of tradition can be a progressive movement that suggests a new way to read classics with a modern method and sensibility by wearing new clothes that the classics are modern. In other words, it can be said that the future of art is creating new values and art through remediation of classics.
