해외문학파의 문학론과 조선문학의 위상학(位相學)

국문 초록

해외문학파는 1930년을 전후해서 문학 출판 및 저널리즘에 종사한 문학연구자들을 통칭하는 용어이다. 해외문학파의 성립은 1927년 『해외문학』의 발간에서 그 연원을 찾을 수 있다. 해외문학파는 한국 유학생으로서는 처음으로 대학에서 문학을 전공했으며, 1920년대 중후반에 상당수의 동경유학생 중 외국문학을 대학에서 전공했다는 것은 한국유학생으로서는 처음있는 일로서 매우 중요한 사건이었다. 해외문학파는 민족주의문학과 계급문학의 대립을 뚫고 해외문학파라는 문단적 지위를 일시적으로 차지하기는 했지만 뚜렷한 문학적 주의나 이념도 제시한 바가 없다. 다만 조선문학의 완성을 위해 해외문학을 번역해야 한다는 주장을 반복하고 변주하고 있을 따름이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 해외문학파는 1930년대 문단에서 가장 뜨거운 주제 가운데 하나였다. 해외문학파의 문화사적 의의는 세계문학전집을 읽으며 문학청년으로 성장한 세대의 감수성이 뒷받침되어 있다는 점에 있다. 또한 한국문학의 참조점이 서구의 문학이라는 점을 강조함으로써 한국문학의 새로운 위상학을 제시했다. 해외문학파는 최남선 이래의 신문학부터 카프의 문학까지 한국의 근대문학이 번역 문학이라는 점을 가시화했으며, 그들은 한국문학의 성장 동력이 외국문학의 번역과 이식에 있음을 반복적으로 주장함으로써 이식문학론의 대중적 인식을 형성했다.

영문 초록

The Haeoe Munhak(Foreign Literature) group was established in Tokyo in 1927 with the publication of the magazine Haeoemunhak. The Haeoe Munhak group’s central figures were Yi Ha-yoon, Jeong In-seob, Kim Jin-seob, Lee Heon-goo, and Ham Dae-hoon. These figures were among the first exchange students to major in foreign literatures at university. After 1930 the Haeoe Munhak group was active in literary publishing and journalism, and also contributed to the development of modern theater by establishing the Society for the Study of Dramatic Art. Unlike the Nationalist or Proletarian literature groups of the time, the Haeoe Munhak group put forth no political stance. However, they did consistently argue that the modern literature of Joseon must begin with the importation of foreign literatures, and that extensive translation of world literature was therefore necessary. The Haeoe Munhak group thereby offered a new topology for Joseon Literature. While the basis for Joseon literature had previously been found in nation, humanity, individuality, emotion, art, class, and so on, the Haeoe Munhak group located the basis for Joseon literature in a process of symbolic accumulation via translation of world literature. They argued that the ‘new literature’ of Joseon was formed via the translation of foreign literatures, and that National and Proletarian literature had been based upon poor translations of foreign literature. They believed that modern Joseon literature could only be developed through translation, accumulation, and transplantation. It is therefore interesting to note that this argument formed another context for a theory of ‘transplanted literature’ like that put forth by Im Hwa.
