1980년대 소설의 젠더적 공간 재현 양상과 그 의미

국문 초록

본고는 1980년대에 발표된 윤정모의 장편소설 『고삐』와 유재순의 르포소설 『여왕벌』을 대상으로, 미군기지 주변의 이태원과 그곳을 살아가고 있는 여성들의 재현 양상을 살폈다. 그동안 민족문학에 의해 이 지역의 여성들은 주로 한 가지 모습으로 단일화되어 왔다. 1980년대적 전형성을 부여받은 ‘기지촌 성매매 여성’이라는 표상이 그것이다. 특히 이 시기에는 문학장에서 기지촌 여성의 과거사를 매개로 민족의 수난에 대한 남성 주체의 사유와 반성이 이루어지는 구도가 문학적 성과를 인정받게 된다. 이를 돌파하기 위해 여성 작가였던 윤정모와 유재순은 이태원 인근에서 벌어진 일들의 묘사에 있어 ‘자전적 체험’과 ‘사실성’을 강조하는 방법을 사용한다. 그런데 이 과정에서 두 작가가 전달하고자 했던 주제는 여전히 남성주의적-민족주의적 의식이었음에도 불구하고, 구체적인 장소에 대한 묘사와 재현은 때로 주제를 약화시키거나 주제와 어긋나는 것처럼 보인다. 『고삐』에서 남성 인물이 관념화된 언어로 주장하는 민족의식의 중요성은 이태원을 위시한 여러 장소들의 구체적인 묘사를 통해 비로소 그 실감이 확보된다. 그러나 이 과정에서 재현의 구체성은 관념의 추상성을 압도하여, 역설적으로 소설이 강조하고자 했던 외부식민화라는 문제 대신 여성의 남성에 의한 내부식민화 문제를 들여다볼 수 있게 하는 계기로 작용한다. 『여왕벌』은 작가로 치환될 수 있는 ‘르포라이터’라는 인물을 서사의 전면에 내세워 『고삐』보다 직접적으로 이태원의 여성들로 하여금 민족의식을 갖출 것을 촉구한다. 그러나 유재순이 등장시키고 있는 ‘이태원 걸’이라는 기호는 작가의 목소리와 어긋나는 방향으로 독자를 이끈다. 결국 소설은 이러한 균열을 해결하지 못한 채 종결을 맞이한다. 『고삐』는 서사의 결말에서 민족의식에 비로소 진정으로 눈 뜬 초점화자를 강조하는 방식으로 문제를 해결하고, 『여왕벌』에서 채 해결되지 못했던 주제와 재현 사이의 균열은 2년 후 영화 <여왕벌>을 통해 사후적으로 봉합된다. 그러나 소설에서 발견되는 이와 같은 서사와 재현의 불일치는 그 자체로 1980년대 한국이라는 시공간이 민족의식이라는 단일한 목소리만으로 수렴될 수 없는 기표들을 포함하고 있던 다층적인 공간이었음을 보여준다.

영문 초록

This article aims to examine the reproduction of Itaewon around the U.S. military base and the women living there, targeting Yoon Jeong-mo’s long-running novel “The reins” published in the 1980s and Yoo Jae-soon’s “The Queen’s Bee.” Until now, the area has been imaged mainly by ethnic literature as a “base village prostitution woman” who was given typicality in the 1980s. In particular, during this period, the literary achievements of the male subject’s reason and reflection on the plight of the people through the elderly women in the base village at the literary center will be recognized. To break through this, Yoon Jung-mo and Yoo Jae-soon, both female writers, use methods to emphasize “voluntary experiences” and “realism” in describing what happened near Itaewon. In the process, though the subject that the two writers were trying to convey was still a masculine-national consciousness, the portrayal and reenactment of the specific place sometimes seem to exceed or go against the subject. The importance of national consciousness, which is claimed by male figures in the conceptualized language in “The reins,” can only be realized through detailed descriptions of various places, including Itaewon. However, in this process, the specificity of reproduction overwhelms the abstraction of the conception, paradoxically allowing women to look into the problem of internalization by men instead of the issue of externalization that the novel intended to emphasize. The “Queen Bee” calls for women in Itaewon to have a national consciousness more directly than “The reins” by putting the character “Reforator” at the forefront of the narrative, which can be replaced as a writer. However, Yoo Jae-soon’s “Lee Tae-won Girl” symbol leads the reader in a way that goes against the writer’s voice. Eventually, the novel ends without solving this rift. “The reins” solves the problem by emphasizing the focus of the national consciousness at the end of the narrative, and the cracks between the theme and the reproduction that were not resolved in the “Queen bee” are posthumously sealed in the film “Queen bee” two years later. However, this discrepancy between the narrative and the reproduction found in the novel shows that the time and space of Korea in the 1980s itself was a multi-layered space that contained signs that could not be converged only by a single voice of national consciousness.
