국문 초록

이 글은 조선의 독립을 위해 온몸을 투신하였음에도 불구하고 독립운동사에 빠져있었던 최원순의 독립운동을 밝히는 것을 목적으로 썼다. 연구방법으로는 역사전기적인 방법으로 실증적인 자료를 토대로 삼았으며 최원순의 독립운동을 밝히기 위하여 생애를 중심으로 연대기적인 순서에 따랐다. 석아(石啞) 최원순(崔元淳)은 전남 광주에서 태어나 일본에서 와세다대학 정경과 재학 중 ‘조선청년독립단’의 결성을 주도하였고, 독립선언서를 비밀리에 등사한 장본인이었으며 조선유학생 학우회와 함께 1919년 2·8독립선언의 막전막후에서 암약하였다. 일경에 검속되었고 감시대상자가 되었음에도 불구하고 조선유학생학우회 순회 강연단으로 3년간 활동하였다. 특히 「이춘원에게 문하노라」로 이광수의 「민족개조론」을 비판하여 주목을 받았고 비평가로 입지를 세웠다. 일제의 감시자 대상자가 되어 일본과 조선에서 독립을 위해 헌신한 그는 신간회 창립회원이자 임원으로, 전조선기자대회 제안자로서 전조선기자대회를 이끌었고 동아일보 기자로 조선총독부를 비판한 죄로 투옥되었지만 일제의 식민통치를 끝까지 비판하였다. 옥고를 치른 과정에서 발병한 폐병으로 낙향하여 요양하면서도 지역사회의 변혁과 궁민들을 구제하는 데 앞장서다가 이른 나이에 요절하였다. 이상의 결과를 통해서 최원순은 조선의 독립을 위해 헌신하였으며 예리한 비평가이자 정론직필의 언론인으로서 올곧은 길을 걸었던 독립운동가였다는 것이 확인되었다.

영문 초록

This article recognizes the role played by patriotic martyr Choi Won Soon in Chosun s independence movement. Choi Won Soon’s name does not figure in the history of the independence movement despite him having devoted his life to the struggle for Chosun’s independence. Seokah (石啞) Choi Won Soon (崔元淳) graduated from Gwangju Public Normal School in 1913, and then finished the teacher department at Seoul Gyungseong High Normal School, and went to study abroad at the Waseda University. At the university, Choi Won Soon became a member of the Chosun Youth Independence Union and worked secretly for the independence movement. For Chosun International Student Association, he took part in the 2.8 Independence Declaration event in Japan in 1919. For three years, Choi Won Soon worked as a member of the Chosun International Student Association’s touring lecture group. In his lecture, “I ask Lee Chun Won,” he particularly criticized Lee Gwang-su’s theory of national reform. Since then, he devoted his entire life for the independence of Chosun. Consequently, he became a target of the surveillance unit of the Japanese colonial rule. He was the founding member and executive of the nationalist organization, Singanhoe and led the All Chosun Journalists’ Congress. Choi Won Soon was imprisoned for criticizing the Japanese Government-General of Korea as a reporter of the Dong-A Ilbo, a widely circulated newspaper in Korea. However, the arrest could not break his determination to fight for independence and he continued to express his opinion in his fearless, candid, and reasonable arguments. After his release from jail, Choi Won Soon died of a lung disease that he had developed during his imprisonment. He was a keen critic and journalist of reasonable argument and frank language and was a patriotic martyr dedicated to the independence of Chosun.
