국문 초록

이 논문은 한국에는 전근대 시대로부터 ‘원민족’이 존재해 왔는데, 이 원민족이 근대성과의 조우라는 역사적인 시점을 맞아 민족주의로 등장하게 되었음을 논증하려는 시도이다. 먼저 민족의 시발시점과 지속과정에 대한 탈식민 시대의 ‘거대서사’들의 역사서술 상의 주장들을 검토한 뒤, 한국이야말로 전근대 시대에 공동체로서의 왕국을 형성하고 유지하기 위한 우호적인 환경을 제공하는 인종적 균질성, 영토적 통합성, 언어적 통일성 그리고 정치적 중앙집권 등의 조건들을 충족함으로써 민족 개념 정의에 근접하는 전형적인 사례가 됨을 밝힌다. 이어 이 글은 대외적으로는 동아시아 세계질서의 ‘패권적 안정’과 국내적으로는 귀족과 관료의 균형에 근거한 ‘중앙집권’이 10세기부터 20세기에 이르기까지 고려와 조선의 두 왕조만 존재했던 예외적인 지속성을 담보했음을 입증한다. 결론적으로 이와 같이 이미 장기지속의 민족형성 과정을 거친 20세기 초의 한국은 근대성과 제국주의의 신시대를 맞아 자연스럽게 새로운 근대 민족주의를 구성하게 된 것이다.

영문 초록

This essay attempts to make a case for the existence of a ‘proto-nation’ in premodern Korea that eventually led to nationalism at the historical juncture of its encounter with modernity. First it examines the historiographical claims of postcolonial master narratives regarding the date of commencement and the process of continuity. Then it goes on to show that Korea constitutes a classic case that has approximated since the premodern period to the definition of nation in terms of ethnic homogeneity, territorial integrity, linguistic unity and political centralisation, all of which were conducive to the formation and maintenance of the community of the realm in the premodern period. The exceptional longevity of Korean dynasties with only two changes from the tenth into the twentieth century, it suggests, was the function of the hegemonic stability of the East Asian world order and the state centralisation based on the domestic aristocratic-bureaucratic balance. The essay concludes that after the longue durée of national becoming Korea at the turn of the last century encountered modernity and the new age of imperialism and nationalism.
