국문 초록

역사박물관의 관람객은 개인의 문화와 정체성을 바탕으로 역사를 주관적으로 해석할 수 있어야 한다는 주장이 확산이 되고 있으나, 현재 역사박물관의 전시와 교육활동은 대부분 한 공동체 특히 지역사회기반을 둔 공동체의 ‘과거’에 대한 상기와 머물고 있다. 본 연구는 실행연구로서 역사박물관이 타인과 공존하며 미래를 바라보는 사회적 교육 기관의 역할을 어떻게 다할 것인가에 대한 문제를 인식하고 이에 따른 사례를 찾아 실천적 개선을 목표로 하고 있다. 본 연구의 사례는 뉴욕시박물관(The Museum of the City of New York)의 <미래도시실험실(Future City Lab)>이며 관람객이 뉴욕의 미래를 설계하는 교육 전시 공간이다. <미래도시실험실>의 <지도 테이블(The Map Table)>은 대형 스크린을 통해 뉴욕의 구획별로 나누어, 경제적 사회적 인구적 통계를 보여준다. 이때 박물관의 관점을 배제하여 관람객이 자신의 정체성을 반영 뉴욕의 현재 상황을 해석하도록 한다(강선주, 2012). <활동 테이블과 거리조경 벽(Activity Tables and Street-scape Wall)>은 참여자가 터치스크린 방식으로 공존의 미래를 위해 뉴욕의 거리, 주거 공간, 공원을 디자인하는 활동이다. <미래도시실험실>은 참여자가 약자들에 대한 실천적 디자인 활동을 하여 현재 경제적 사회적 이득을 많이 누리지 못하는 계층을 위해 목소리를 내도록 유도한다. 관람객은 역사박물관이 형성한 과거를 습득하는 것이 아니라, 참여적 활동을 통해 공동체의 미래에 대한 설계를 하게 된다.

영문 초록

In spite of a widespread argument that history museums should respect visitors’ subjective interpretation of history based on their own culture and identity, most of the current exhibitions and educational activities of history museums are based on a certain viewpoint of communities only regarding ‘the Past’. This study adopts the action research method in order to recognize the problem of how the history museums can fulfill their role as a social education institution. The case of this study is of the Museum of the City of New York, an educational exhibition space where visitors design the future of New York. The Map Table in shows economic, social and demographic statistics by dividing the map into sections of New York through a large screen. In the statistics, the viewpoint of the museum is excluded so that visitors can interpret the current situation in New York reflecting their identity(Kang, 2012). Activity Tables and Streetscape Wall are activities where participants design streets, residential spaces, and parks in New York for the future of coexistence through a touchscreen. invites participants to make voices for those who do not currently get to enjoy many economic and social benefits by creating practical design activities for the weak and create spaces for communities and people who live together ‘from me to us’. Instead of learning about the past from the museum’s view point, the visitors get to design the future of the city in their own eyes through participatory activities.
