게바의 외식 행위, 왜 그리고 어떻게 일어났는가?

국문 초록

갈라디아서에서 바울을 통하여 유일하게 보도되는 안디옥 사건 단락은 오랜 기간 많은 학자들로부터 뜨거운 관심을 받아왔다. 이는 초기 기독교의 발전과 확산의 흐름 가운데 우호적인 관계를 맺어오던 예수의 수제자 베드로(게바)와 이방인을 위한 사도인 바울이 정면으로 충돌했다는 기록 때문이다. 한편에서는 게바가 범한 행동의 심각성과 그것이 안디옥 교회와 나아가 갈라디아 여러 교회에 끼칠 파급력을 고려하지 못한 채바울의 책망을 다소 지나친 것으로 매도하였으며, 다른 편에서는 “복음의 진리” 앞에서 타협적인 입장을 취했던 게바의 모습에 의문을 던지며 바울을 적극적으로 옹호하였다. 겨우 4절에 불과한 본 단락을 풀어내기 위한 다양한 해석들이 제시되었으나 기본적인 자료상의 한계와 게바의 예상치 못한 결정으로 말미암아 저마다의 신학적 상상력이 남용되어 온 것이 사실이다. 학자들의 공통된 목소리는 안디옥 사건이 1세기 중반 초기 기독교의 정체성을 재구성하는 데에 있어서 결정적인 역할을 했다는 것이다. 본 사건은 향후 바울의 기독교가 어떠한 공동체를 추구하며, 특히 유대교(율법)와의 관계 설정을 어떻게 할 것인지를 단편적으로 보여주는 핵심 단서로 받아들여진다. 본고의 목적은 이전의 연구들이 보여준 한계를 극복하기 위해 사회 심리학적 전망에서 게바의 외식 행위가 일어나게 된 원인 및 과정을 분석하는 데 집중하면서 이를 통한 합리적인 이해를 모색해 보는 것이다. 이를 통해 게바의 외식 행위는 그의 독단적인 신학적 사고에서 비롯된 것이 아니라 그를 둘러싸고 있던 강력한 사회적 영향력(이방인을 향한 유대교의 ‘고정 관념/편견/차별’)으로 말미암아 순간적으로 그의 태도가 변경(예루살렘 교회에 의한 ‘권위에 대한 복종’)된 것임을 새롭게 밝히고 있다.

영문 초록

According to the Galatians of Paul, the Antioch Incident has been a long debate among the scholars. It originated in a remarkable collision between Peter (Cephas), the first disciple of Jesus, and Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, in a stage of spread and development of the early Christianity. On the one hand, the rebuke of Paul against Cephas was one-sidedly criticized without considering the gravity and impact of Cephas’ attitude toward the Antioch and Galatian churches. On the other hand, the hypocrisy of Cephas was denounced on account of the compromising act for “the truth of Gospel”. Even though there were a variety of opinions to interpret this short passage (only 4 verses) last few centuries, too much theological imagination has been used because of the material limitation and the unexpected behavior of Cephas. Many scholars still agree with the fact that the Antioch Incident played a decisive role to reconstruct the history of the early Christianity in the mid-first century. This incident, therefore, includes a key clue to figure out the identity of Paul’s Christianity and the relationship between the Gentile Christianity and Jewish Christianity. This article carefully seeks a rational understanding about the cause and process of Cephas’ hypocrisy in a social psychological perspective. Social psychology is an useful tool for analyzing how an individual behavior can be changed through social influences surrounding oneself. To sum up, the behavior of Cephas’ hypocrisy resulted from the ‘obedience to authority’ by Jerusalem church. And the Jewish superior identity in social influence caused ‘stereotype/ prejudice/ discrimination’ to the Gentiles in Antioch church.
