국문 초록

이 논문은 포스트 코로나 시대에 과학과 신앙의 관계에 집중하고자 한다. 과학과 종교적 가치에 대한 충돌을 염두에 두는 것은 아니지만, 필자는 이 논문을 통하여 과학에 대한 기독교의 관점을 라인홀드 니버(Reinhold Niebuhr)의 신학을 통하여 살펴보고자 한다. 니버의 관점을 재조명하는 이유는 다음과 같은 세 가지 이유에서이다. 첫째, 니버는 현대 과학에 대하여 거리를 두고 지나친 낙관론을 금하였다. 이는 계몽주의적 이성에 대한 과도한 맹신을 경계하고, 종교의 근본적 가치에 대하여 강조하기 위함이었다. 둘째, 니버는 과학과의 거리 두기를 통하여 종교가 추구하여야 할 근원적인 목적이 무엇인지 분명히 하였다. 과학과 종교가 추구하는 목적이 무엇이지 분명하게 할 뿐만이 아니라, 당시 자유주의나 근본주의의 한계를 지적함으로써 과학의 시대에 종교의 정체성을 분명하게 하였다. 셋째, 니버는 기독교 현실주의적 관점에서 공공 신학의 실마리를 제공하였다. 니버 당시 과학 정치와 같은 개념은 없었지만, 니버의 사상에는 과학이 공공 영역에서 어떤 역할을 할지 그 실마리를 제시하였다고 본다. 이와 같은 니버의 통찰력은 이 시대 기독교가 코로나19를 놓고 어떻게 과학을 이해하여야 할지 신학적인 방향을 제공하여 줄 수 있다고 기대한다. 이 논문의 한계는 니버의 신학에서 그가 이해한 과학의 문제에 집중하였기 때문에, 니버 신학의 중심인 인간과 도덕의 문제, 정치 윤리, 사랑과 정의, 기독교의 공공성, 신학의 비전, 그리고 니버식의 기독교 변증법에 대한 이론들은 세세하게 다루지 못하였다. 다만 포스트 코로나 시대에 과학과 종교와의 관계를 니버식의 관점에서 조명한다는 점을 밝힌다.

영문 초록

This paper will concentrate on the relationship between science and faith in the post-corona age. The collision between science and religious values is not the focus, but the author will attempt to examine Christianity’s viewpoint on science through the theology of Reinhold Niebuhr. The perspective of Niebuhr is re-examined for the following three reasons. First, Niebuhr kept a distance from modern science and forbade overly optimistic views. This was done to practice caution against having excessive faith in Enlightenment reason and to emphasize the fundamental values of religion. Second, Niebuhr made clear which fundamental goals religion must pursue while keeping a distance from science. Not only did he clarify the purpose of science and religion, but he also helped to gain an understanding of the limitations of liberalism and fundamentalism. Third, Niebuhr provided the beginnings of a public theology from the perspective of Christian realism. There was no concept of science politics in Niebuhr’s time but Niebuhr’s perspective provided a key for understanding the role that science should play in the public domain. Such insights in Niebuhr’s thought can be expected to provide theological direction on how contemporary Christianity may approach science amid the COVID-19 pandemic. This paper’s limit is that it is concentrated on the issue of science as understood by Niebuhr in his theology, and therefore, issue of man and morality, political ethics, love and justice, public nature of Christianity, the vision of theology and Niebuhr’s theories on Christian dialectic which are the center of his theology, were not discussed in detail. It merely examines the relationship between science and religion in the post corona era from Niebuhr’s perspective.
