특별히 5세기 대표적인 수도 문헌들인 마르티누스(Martinus of Tours), 파울리누스(Paulinus of Nola), 호노라투스(Honoratus of Arles)와 관련된 문헌들의 의도와 배경에 많은 관심을 기울이지 않았다.

The aim of this article is to re-examine why and how the fifth-century Gallic aristocrats became ascetic bishops in the church. The socio-political changes of the early fifth-century Gaul caused “the aristocratization of the Church in Gaul.” That is to say, the nobility gradually chose to be monks and bishops in the rapidly changing environment of Gaul. Martin Heinzelmann and Ralph Mathisen have been concerned with why and how aristocrats dedicated themselves to ascetical and episcopal lives. They take into consideration how the Gallic aristocrats incorporated their traditional noble values and identity into Christian ideals. Heinzelmann argued that Gallic bishops came from Roman noble families and thus had a tendency to regard episcopal office as an extension of social privilege. Ralph Mathisen develops Heinzelmann’s argument. He concludes that the early fifth-century nobility began to reinterpret their traditional aristocratic stature. In particular, the noble class came to value ecclesiastical offices much more highly. This new understanding of traditional values led many Gallic aristocrats to become ascetic and attracted many to the bishoprics. As late-antique scholarship suggests, this can be understood as survival strategy in a transitional world. However, this article attempts to revisit the theses of these two influential scholars. It argues that the simplicity of their well-ordered arguments raises problems. Unfortunately, they are not much concerned with the diverse contexts and intentions of the Gallic documents, especially of the ecclesiastical writers: Martion of Tours, Paulinus of Nola, and Honoratus of Arles. Gallic ascetic writings provide another significant motivational element: pure commitment to Christian ideals (giving up secular noble status, giving alms to the poor, and enhancing missionary work). Thus, this paper shows that as Gallic monastic forefathers, their lives act as an important motivation for the nobility to ascetic conversion to Christianity.
