국문 초록

1988년에서 1990년대는 한국 사회 민주 진영에 급격한 지각 변동이 있었다. 노동자, 농민 대투쟁으로 시작하여 통일 운동, 그리고 중산층의 성장으로 시민운동의 확대, 지방자치제의 부활 등 다양한 사회 운동이 정치 사회 운동의 연속 선상에서 발전하였다. 기독교 운동은 80년 광주 항쟁 이후 꾸준히 통일에 대한 논의를 발전시키다가 88년 선언을 필두로 ‘선민주, 후통일’이라는 단계적 운동을 지양하고 통일을 근본 목표로 하는 통일 운동에 집중하였다. 이러한 전체 흐름에서 ‘조국의 정의화, 자주화, 민주화, 통일’의 관점에 서 있던 고영근은 하나님 정의를 정치, 경제, 사회, 문화, 종교에서 내재화해야 함을 목적으로 한 정치적 민족주의와 내부 민주화를 지향하였다. ‘선민주 후통일’의 관점을 뛰어넘어 하나님 정의의 내재화를 기독교 통일 운동의 최우선 선결 과제로 본 그의 관점은 보다 구체적인 사역에 몰두하게 하였다. 한국 교회 갱신 운동을 중심으로 공정언론촉구성직자회, 지방 자치제의 확립을 위한 노태우 고소 고발, 그리고 통일된 조국을 향한 기독교적 실천 행위로서 비전향 장기수 후원 사업 등을 중심으로 독자적인 활동을 전개하였다. 이로써 민주주의의 초석인 개인의 주체성 확립과 그에 대한 상호 존중이 하나님 사랑의 근본임을 실천적으로 이루려 하였다. 개별자로서의 민중을 향한 ‘찾아감’의 목민 사역의 방식은 비전향 장기수 후원 사업에서도 잘 드러나는데, 그의 반공 의식의 한계에도 불구하고 통일된 조국을 향한 기독교적 실천 방식의 유의미성은 오늘의 평화 통일 운동의 관점에서도 시사하는 바가 크다.

영문 초록

Rapid upheaval occurred to the democratic camp of Korean society leading up to the 1990s. Various social movements, including the unification movement, the expansion of civic movements due to the growth of the middle class, and the restoration of the decentralization system developed persistently, starting from the struggles of laborers and farmers. The Christian movement steadily developed discussions on unification since the Gwangju Democratic Uprising, concentrating on the unification of the Korean peninsula and rejecting a step-by-step movement, namely pro-democratization and postunification. During this process, Go Young-geun’s perspectives on the justice system, independence, democracy, and unification contributed to the pursuit of political nationalism and internal democracy, aiming to internalize God’s justice in politics, economy, society, culture, and religion. Beyond the perspective of “pro-democracy and post-unification,” his perspective involving God’s internationalization of justice as the foremost task to be solved in the Christian unification movement absorbed him in more concrete ministry. Centered on the Korean church renewal movement, he was engaged in independent activities, focusing on the Clergies Concerned for the Just Media, Roh Tae-woo’s accusation and charge, and the sponsorship for unconverted long-term political prisoners. Therefore, he practically tried to ascertain how the establishment of individuals’ independence and mutual respect and the foundation of democracy are the expression of the fundamental love of God. The Mokmin Ministry, namely visiting the public as individuals, is well-revealed in the sponsorship for unconverted, long-term political prisoners. Despite the limitation of his anticommunism, the significance of his Christian practice method for a unified fatherland has big implications even from today’s peaceful unification movement perspective.
