This paper discusses the significance of Christian coins minted between the 4th century and the zenith of the Byzantine Empire. It analyzes approximately 500 coins to study the emergence, process of transition, theological shapes, legends and characteristics of those coins.
By the fourth century, the coinage system of the Roman Empire changed from using silver to create denarius to using bronze to create follis.
Constantine, the emperor of rome and Christian adherent who implemented the follis monetary system, also made a significant contribution to the history of coinage. He was the first to publish Christian coins in the Roman Empire.
The Christian pattern in this coinage, which was initiated by the Great Emperor, served as a prototype for later generations to adopt, including the Byzantine Empire. Christian coins had a missionary nature, but were soon used as a means of political propaganda, as part of the emperor’s goal to win political support from Christian parties. The spread of and changes to Christian coins goes hand in hand with the spread of and changes to Christianity in the Roman Empire.
Christian coins initially used the symbols of Christ’s name and the cross, with the letter ‘Chi,’ the abbreviation of Christ’s name. In the mid-fourth century, a large number of Christian coins containing the theme of the legend of the Battle of the Milvian Bridge were circulated, but at the end of Constantine’s Dynasty, this kind of coin stopped being minted and disappeared. This is the only type of Christian coin that was not inherited by the Byzantine Empire. Cross coins were used to signify victory in each empire and became the most popular images for coins. By the end of the fourth century, the majority of the coins produced in the both Empires had become Christian coins.
Christian coins were also used in the Byzantine Roman Empire and continued to be developed when the Western Roman Empire collapsed in 476 AD. All coins minted in the Byzantine Empire were Christian coins. The Byzantines published coins graven with various kinds of cross symbols. Even coins with as many as seven crosses were minted since the 6th century. By the seventh century, for the first time ever, coins with the face of Christ was cast, whether it was a gold solidus coin or a copper follis. During the period of iconoclasm in the eighth century, the face of Christ temporarily disappeared from the coins, and the empire issued coins with Christ’s full name. But after the ninth century, Basil I minted the coins with an image of Christ again.
Christian coins and Church history share their glories and challenges together.
