국문 초록

본 연구는 요한일서 5:6-8의 물의 의미에 대한 연구이다. 본 논문은 크게 두 부분으로 나누어진다. 전반부에서는 이 물의 의미에 대한 학자들의 여섯 가지 주요 견해들을 검토한다(물은 세례/피는 예수의 죽음, 물이 성령을 상징, 물은 세례/피는 성찬, 물이 육신적 출생을 가리킴, 물과 피는 예수의 못 박힌 몸의 부활을 가리킴, 물을 예수의 세례 사역으로 해석). 후반부에서는 이 가능성들 중 가장 합당한 가능성을 찾기 위해 필자의 독창적인 방법론인 두 가지 문자/상징 지표 활용을 포함하여 전체 여섯 가지 근거를 제시하였다(인접 문맥에 상징적 표현의 등장 여부 지표, 문자적으로 해석할 때 의미가 잘 통하는지 여부 지표, 물과 피가 유사한 방식으로 기능함, 요한일서가 기록된 역사적 상황, 요한일서 5:6-8과 요한복음 1:31-34 간 언어적 병행, 공관복음과 사도행전의 증언). 이를 통해 필자는 “물은 세례/피는 예수의 죽음 견해”가 가장 설득력이 있는 견해임을 관찰했다.

영문 초록

This study examines the meaning of water in 1 John 5:6-8. This article is divided into two parts. The first half examines six main views on the meaning of this water (water refers to Jesus’ baptism in contrast to blood which refers to his death, water refers to the Spirit, water refers to baptism in contrast to blood which refers to the eucharist, water refers to physical birth, water and blood refer to the resurrection of Jesus’ crucified body, interpreting water as the baptismal ministry of Jesus). In the latter part, six grounds including two literal/symbolic indicators were applied to this passage to find the most convincing option of these possibilities (The presence or absence of symbolic expressions in the immediate context, whether the water or water-related imagery makes sense literally, water and blood function similar way, the historical situation in which 1 John was written, linguistic parallels between 1 John 5:6-8 and John 1:31-34, and the testimony of Synoptic Gospels and Acts). This application helped me identify that among the remaining four literal interpretations, the first one, “water refers to Jesus’ baptism while blood refers to his death,” is the most convincing view.
