근대 동북아해역 교통망과 지식네트워크

국문 초록

근대 이후 동북아해역에서는 인적 물적 이동이 대규모로 전개되기 시작했다. 이러한 대이동은 근대 이전의 동북아지역의 질서를 해역을 중심으로 한 새로운 질서로 만들었다. 그리고 이것은 유럽이라고 하는 특정 지역을 중심으로 한 세계질서 하에 편입되는 그런 지역 질서였다. 이것을 가능케 한 것이 바로 근대적인 교통망의 형성이다. 과학기술과 근대산업이 만들어낸 이 이동의 토대인 교통망은 동북아해역에서도 유럽과 마찬가지로 지역간 인적 이동을 광범위하게 추동했다. 특히 인적 이동의 한 가지 유형인 유학은 이러한 교통망의 바탕위에서 동아시아 지역내 지식과 지식인의 네트워크를 형성했는데, 이 글에서는 20세기초 일본 도쿄를 중심으로 한 지식네트워크를 동북아해역의 교통망과 연결시켜 탐구하였다. 19세기말 동아시아 지역에서 국제무역을 폭넓게 추동하려 했던 서구 열강들은, 러시아와 영국을 대표주자로 곧 각각 대륙과 해양 세력을 대변하면서 그리고 그 지역의 대표적인 교통수단인 철로와 항로의 건설을 목표로 설정한 두 국가의 주도하에 교통망 건설을 진행하였다. 여기에 러일전쟁에서 승리한 일본이 가세하여 영국과 일본을 중심으로 한 근대 해양국가가 동북아해역에서 우위를 점하게 되었다. 경제적 이익과 군사적 이익을 확보하기 위해 설치된 근대적인 교통망 위에 청과 조선의 지식인들은 신문물을 수용하기 위해 그 항로와 철로를 타고 유럽과 일본으로 달려갔다. 특히 20세기초 10년간 일본 도쿄에서의 유학러쉬는 유학생을 중심으로 해서 동아시아라는 지역인식을 갖게 되고, 이를 바탕으로 아시아연대 또는 아시아주의를 표방하는 분위기를 낳는 계기가 되었다. 이러한 현상은 도쿄를 중심으로 동아시아 각 지역에서 온 유학생을 비롯한 지식인간의 교류 즉 지식네트워크에 의해 가능했고, 구체적으로 그 네트워크는 결사와 출판이라는 형태로 드러났다.

영문 초록

Since modern times, the movement of human material has begun to take place in Northeast Asia. This great movement created a new order centered on the sea area in the pre-modern Northeast Asian region. And this was such a regional order incorporated under a world order centered around a region called Europe and the United States. It is the formation of a modern transportation network that makes this possible. The transportation network, the foundation of this movement created by science and technology, has also broadly driven human movement between regions in Northeast Asia. In particular, studying abroad, one type of human movement, formed a network of knowledge and intellectuals in the East Asian region based on this transportation network. This paper explores the knowledge network centered on Tokyo, Japan, at the beginning of the 20th century by linking it with the transportation network in the Northeast Asia. The Western powers, who pioneered railroads and routes in the late 19th century, and tried to drive international trade in East Asia, were to Russia and the United Kingdom, representing continents and oceans, and under the leadership of two nations that set rails and routes as the goal of building a network. It began to be installed. In addition to Japan, which won the Russo-Japanese War, the modern maritime nations, led by the United Kingdom and Japan, gained an edge in the Northeast Asian region. On the modern transportation network established to secure economic and military interests, the intellectuals of Qing and Joseon drove to Europe and Japan on the route and railroads to accommodate new culture. In particular, the study rush in Tokyo, Japan, during the first decade of the twentieth century made East Asia a regional perception, and based on this, it expressed Asian solidarity or Asianism. This phenomenon was made possible by the exchange of knowledge among international students and intellectuals in each region of East Asia, especially in Tokyo, or in the form of association and publication.
