국문 초록

이 연구는 감상 활동에서 작품을 보는 주체인 감상자에 주목하여 초등학교 5학년 학생들이 미술작품에서 무엇을 , 어떻게 보고 있는지 현상을 밝히고 나아가 학습자의 보기 특성에 기반하여 감상 활동을 도울 수 있는 방법을 모색해 보고자 하였다. 10명의 초등학생을 대상으로 Think-Aloud 방법으로 수집한 자료를 분석하여 다음과 같이 두 가지 연구 문제를 해결하였다. 첫째, 무엇을 보는가 , 학생들은 사실적으로 표현된 소재를 중심으로 눈에 띄는 것을 선택적으로 보았다. 둘째, 어떻게 보는가 , 첫인상에 의존해서 작가의 의도를 추측하며 비평 단계를 다양하게 연결하며 보았다. 무엇보다도 비평 단계이론과 달리 반응, 지각분석, 개인적 해석을 넘나들며 각자의 방식으로 봄을 학생들의 반응을 통해서 확인하고 이해할 수 있었다. 교사중심의 선형적 단계 지도에 초점이 맞추어진 비평 교육을 학습자 보기 특성에 기반하여 학생 각자의 보는 방법을 확장시켜 나갈 수 있도록 지원할 필요가 있다. 그러기 위해서는 비평 능력은 학습된 역량임을 이해하고 잘 보기 위한 지식과 방법에 대한 배움이 있는 비평 교육의 실천이 필요함을 제언하였다.

영문 초록

This paper, focusing on the agents of looking and seeing in the context of art, aims to explore what 5th graders at primary school look at and see in paintings and how they do it, and to help learners enjoy activities of looking and seeing. Ten fifth graders as the participants of this study were involved in Think-Aloud interviews. Interviews were recorded and fully transcribed, and then analyzed. The results showed that the young learners seemed to pay more attention to themes, looking at and seeing only something saliently visible. It was also found that they depended on their first impression of the artwork, considered if it contained something real, and objectified it for the story of the artwork. Furthermore, in contrast with well-known 4steps of art criticism, individual learners varied in ways of looking and seeing. They ignored the boundaries of the steps, going in and out of reactions, perception and evaluation, and personal interpretation. It suggests that in learning about art criticism, enforcement of somewhat fixed linear steps of criticism to learners may have to be replaced with encouragement of individuality of learners who would extend their own ways of looking and seeing, and thinking creatively in the broader context of art.
