崔永年의 <詩家叢話>를 중심으로 살펴본 19세기 말~20세기 초 문인들

국문 초록

본고는 구한말 한시계의 중요 정보를 많이 담고 있지만 본격적인 연구가 진행되지 않은 崔永年의 <詩家叢話>를 중심으로 19세기 말~20세기 초에 두드러진 문인들의 면모를 살폈다. 최영년은 1900~1914년경 집필한 詩話 초고를 추려서 1914~1915년 『신문계』 <시화>를 게재했으며, 이를 보완하여 1924~1926년 『매일신보』 <시가총화>를 연재했다. <시가총화>는 최영년의 한시 비평을 집대성한 성과라 평가해도 무방하다. 총 204회의 연재분에 적지 않은 비평이 실렸다. <시가총화>에는 특히 최영년 자신과 관련된 이야기가 다채로운데, 최영년에게 한시를 가르쳐준 沈英慶이나, 최영년이 깊은 관심을 갖고 지도했던 金昌洙에 관한 항목이 눈에 띈다. ‘심영경-최영년-김창수’로 이어지는 학맥은 唐詩風의 한시 짓기에 주력하여 淸나라 문인 袁枚의 시풍을 따라하는 데 급급한 근세의 풍조와 다른 행보를 보였다. <시가총화>에는 최영년이 편찬한 『八家笙鏞』도 언급된다. 『팔가생용』은 李亮淵, 趙秀三, 姜瑋, 李象秀, 鄭芝潤, 李尙迪, 朴天裕, 沈英慶이라는 총 8명의 시인이 지은 2천여 수를 수록한 詩選集이다. 최영년은 초학자가 당시풍의 한시를 지을 수 있도록 이들 8명의 한시를 참고자료로 제시했다. 그리고 숙달된 시인이 궁극적으로 도달할 단계는 당나라 시를 뛰어넘는 경지로 전제하고 李黃中의 시를 극찬했다. <시가총화>를 통해 근세에 흥기했던 시 모임과 여기에 참여했던 시인들을 짐작할 수 있다. 그중 趙秉澤(1858~1924)의 『隨堂賀述』에 수록된 영국인 魯義道(Royds W. Massy)의 한시에 대한 소감을 담은 항목은 매우 흥미롭다. 최영년은 <시가총화>에 로이드의 원작이 아닌 번역된 한시를 인용한 후에 서양의 시에 대한 뚜렷한 주관을 반영한 비평을 남겼다. 최영년은 말년 행적으로 인해 그간 학계에서 크게 주목받지 못했지만, 당시의 기록물은 그를 20세기 초반 한시의 거장으로 손꼽고 있다. 현존하는 객관적 자료를 꼼꼼히 검토하여 최영년의 문학사적 위치를 재정립할 필요가 있다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the literary writers who excelled in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, focusing on the Shiga-Chongwha(詩家叢話) written by Choi Yeong-neon(崔永年) which contains a lot of important information about Joseon s Chinese poetry. Despite its importance, Shiga-Chongwha has not been studied in depth. Choi Yeong-neon wrote initial drafts between 1900 and 1914, and published Shi-hwa(詩話) in the Journal Sinmunge(新文界) between 1914 and 1915. In addition, the updated manuscript was published Shiga- Chongwha in the newspaper called Maeil-Sinbo(每日申報) between 1924 and 1926. Thus, Shiga-Chongwha can be considered as a masterpiece among his collections of literary criticism. There are a lot of literary criticism in total for 204 series. In particular, there are various outstanding stories related to Choi Yeong-neon himself including the anecdotes about his teacher, Shim Yeong-geong(沈英慶), who taught him poetry and his student, Kim Chang-soo(金昌洙), he taught with a great interest. These three (Shim Yeong-geong, Choi Yeong-neon, Kim Chang-soo) wrote poems following Tang(唐) poetry’s style, when most modern-day writers tried to follow the Qing(淸) poetry’s style. Choi Yeong-neon also mentions his own book Palga-Saengyong(八家笙鏞) in his Shiga-Chongwha. Palga-Saengyong is a collection of more than 2,000 poets written by eight poets, Lee Lyang-yeon(李亮淵), Cho Soo- sam(趙秀三), Kang Wi(姜瑋), Lee Sang-soo(李象秀), Jeong Ji-yun(鄭芝潤), Lee Sang-jerk(李尙迪), Park Cheon-yu(朴天裕) and Shim Yeong- geong(沈英慶). Choi Yeong-neon introduced poems of these eight poets to first-time learners of poems to make them follow Tang’s poem style. Choi Yeong-neon thoughts that ultimately poem leaners need to go beyond Tang’s style as Lee Huang-jung(李黃中) did. Shiga-Chongwha provides important insights regarding modern poetry groups (詩社) and the poets who affiliated with the groups. Among them, Choi Yeong-neon’ impression about the poem by a British consular, Royds W. Massy is very interesting. This poem was published in the Sudang- Hasul(隨堂賀述) of Cho Byeong-taek(趙秉澤, 1858~1924). It should be noted that Choi Yeong-neon’s impression was relied on the translated version in Chinese, not on the original English version. His impression conveys his critical view on Western poetry. Choi Yeong-neon has not received much attention in the academic world due to his political stand in his late life, but the records about him indicate that he was a competent poet of the early 20th century. Thus, it is necessary to carefully review the materials related to Choi Young-neon.
