국문 초록

이 글은 해방신학의 기원을 1950, 60년대의 브라질 가톨릭 운동의 맥락에서 살펴보고자 한다. 브라질의 가톨릭 운동은 근대 세계에서 가톨릭의 영향력을 복원하려는 제도적 필요성에 의해 제창된 가톨릭 액션에서 출발하지만, 1950년대에서 브라질의 현실과 만나면서 급진화 과정을 거쳐, 50년대 말과 60년대 초반에 마르크스주의를 수용하면서 가톨릭 좌파로 발전한다. 그리고 이 운동들은 군부 정권의 탄압과 보수적인 교계의 외면으로 60년대 후반에 이르러 쇠락의 길을 걷지만, 브라질 사회와 가톨릭교회에 남긴 발자취는 뚜렷하다. 무엇보다도 해방신학을 비롯한 진보적인 교회 흐름을 정초하는데 큰 기여를 했다. 두 운동 사이의 연계는 인적 차원이나 이념적 차원에 잘 드러난다. 특히 가난한 이들을 위한 선택과 연대, 가톨릭의 사회적 가르침에 대한 충실성, 구조적 접근을 통한 변혁적 전망, 반자본주의적 태도, 서구 신학에 대한 비판 등에서, 이후 해방신학에 나타나는 주요한 특성을 잘 보여주고 있다. 이러한 맥락에서 보았을 때 브라질 가톨릭교회의 진보적인 전환은 해방신학이 아니라, 그보다 앞서 이뤄졌던 가톨릭 운동에서 시작되었고, 그러한 실천적 계기들이 신학적으로 종합되고 체계화되면서 해방신학이 태동한 것으로 볼 수 있다.

영문 초록

This article examines the origins of liberation theology in the context of the Brazilian Catholic movement of the 1950s and ‘60s. The Catholic movement in Brazil was started as Catholic Action, promoted by the institutional necessity to restore Catholic influence in the modern world. But in the 1950s, this movement was radicalized and evolved into the Catholic left and embraced Marxism in the late fifties and early sixties of Brazil in an effort to respond to its context. And these movements were on the decline in the late sixties due to the oppression of the military regime and the conservative hierarchies, but their footprints left in Brazilian society and the Catholic Church are evident. Above all, it contributed to the foundation of a progressive church movement and Liberation Theology. The link between the two movements is well represented on the human and ideological levels. Especially in the solidarity with the poor, the fidelity to Catholic social teaching, the transformational outlook through a structural approach, the anti-capitalist attitude, and the criticism of Western theology, this progressive movement anticipates the major features of later Liberation Theology. In this context, the progressive transformation of the Brazilian Catholic Church does not begin with Liberation Theology. It started with the Catholic movement that preceded this theology. Liberation Theology was born as such practical intuitions were synthesized and organized theologically.
