오로라 모랄레스의 『살아서 집에 도달하기』에서의 혼종성

국문 초록

본 논문은 푸에르토리코 출신의 유태계 작가 오로라 레빈스 모랄레스의 『살아서 집에 도달하기』에서 나타나는 혼종성을 분석하려는 시도이다. 그녀의 대표작인 시 「미주의 아이」에 초점을 맞추고자 한다. 이산으로 기인한 혼종적인 주체를 다루어 온 작가의 시와 산문은 모랄레스 자신과 그녀 가족의 다문화적인 삶을 반영하고 있다. 작가는 혼종성이 두드러지는 푸에르토리코에서 출생하여 13세 때 미국으로 이주해서 생활했다. 그녀는 혈통적으로도 이미 혼혈인데다 이산을 통하여 문화적으로도 혼종성을 지니게 되었다. 그녀는 순수한 푸에르토리코 인으로도 순수한 미국인으로도 규정될 수 없는 주변부적인 존재로 경계선에 위치한다. 영어는 그녀의 의식의 언어이고, 스페인어는 그녀의 신체의 언어이다. 「남쪽」, 「이민자들」과 「푸에르토리코 성」에서 밝히고 있듯이, 그녀는 떠나온 푸에르토리코적인 속성에서 벗어나지 못하고 이끌린다. 그녀의 정체성을 형성해 온 지역들을 표기할 때 첫 철자를 비관습적으로 소문자를 사용하는 이유 역시 지역적 정체성에 대한 기존의 고정관념으로부터 탈피한 것을 드러내기 위한 목적이다. 「미주의 아이」의 마지막 연에서 자신이 문화적·역사적으로 구성되었음을 선언한다. 인종적, 문화적 그리고 지리적인 관점에서 이질적인 요소들에 의해 구성된 자신의 혼종성을 그녀는 수용한다.

영문 초록

This article is an attempt to analyze Aurora Levins Morales’s Getting Home Alive, co-authored with her mother. This focuses on her most famous poem “Child of the Americas.” Morales is a Jewish writer who was born in Puerto Rico and has been living in America since her age of 13. As a mestiza, she is placed at the border line of the countries, cultures, regions as well as races. “Child of the Americas” manifestly represents her hybrid identity that resulted from the diaspora. Both the U.S. and Puerto Rico are the regions characterized by diaspora at multiple levels. She can be defined as neither purely American nor Puerto Rican. Although English is her language of consciousness, Spanish she uses is the language representative of her body. In her proses including “South,” “Immigrants,” and “Puertoricanness,” she confesses that she is magnetized toward and preoccupied with the Puerto Rican. Although the Puerto Rican identity was oppressed in the U.S., it can not be forgotten and denied for it is embedded in her body. As manifested in the final stanza, she declares that she was historically constructed. She accepts her hybridity embracing the selves constituted by the heterogeneous elements in various aspects.
