영화음악이 영상에 미치는 효과

국문 초록

이 글은 영화음악의 역할과 기능에 대한 이론적 분석을 통해 일련의 기준을 확보하고 이를 토대로 영화음악이 영상에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지에 대한 연구이다. 특히 영화음악의 역할과 기능이 가장 적절하게 드러났다고 평가되어지는 영화 「인생은 아름다워」에서 적용된 몇몇 주요 음악에 대해 분석함으로써, 영화 전반에 거쳐 영화음악이 영상과 영화 구성에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지에 대해 구체적으로 확인할 수 있다. 그 과정에서 영화에 삽입된 음악의 경우 원곡과 비교·분석함으로써 효과적인 스토리 전달에 결정적으로 기여한다는 사실 또한 알 수 있었다. 본 연구의 독창적인 측면은 선행 연구를 통해 자주 언급된 ‘유도동기(Leitmotif)’와 함께 ‘표제음악(Program music)’을 영화에 적용하여 이를 새롭게 조명했다는 점이다. 영화음악이 갖는 다양한 역할과 기능은 영화의 텍스트가 갖는 한계를 극복할 수 있게 만드는데 결정적으로 기여한다. 관객은 영상을 통해 이미지를 떠올리기도 하지만, 영상은 그 자체로는 이면에 있는 것들을 묘사해 내지 못하는 한계를 지닌다. 하지만 영화음악은 영상이 갖는 이러한 한계를 극복할 수 있도록 해준다. 다시 말해 영화음악은 영화 이면에 있는 본질을 읽을 수 있도록 도와주는 역할을 하게 된다. 이른바‘표제음악’을 통해 영화 전체의 주제를 전달하고, ‘유도동기’를 적용함으로써 일관성 있는 이미지를 형성하고, ‘소스음악’을 통해 영화의 흐름에서 관객의 정서를 이입시키게 된다. 따라서 이러한 일련의 영화음악이 갖는 역할이 음악을 통해 감동을 선사하기 때문에 영화를 보다 풍부하게 만들어 주는 측면도 있겠지만, 보다 근본적인 역할은 영상을 통해 보여줄 수 없는 것을 보여주기 때문에 영상을 대신하는 효과가 있다는 점에서 찾을 수 있다.

영문 초록

This article is about how the film music influences the film based on a set of criteria which was built by theoretical analysis of the roles and the functions of film music. First of all, in this study I identify how film music influence the film and format by analyzing several music from the movie, “Life is beautiful”, which is the mostly well- evaluated film for revealing the roles and the functions of music. Moreover, I showed the comparative analysis between the soundtracks of the film and the original piece and represented that the soundtracks play a crucial role in the film to deliver the story effectively. The original aspect of this research is the way to apply “Program music” along with “Leitmotif” which have been frequently mentioned in the previous studies and shedded new light. The various roles and functions of the soundtracks decisively contribute to overcome the limitation of the texts from the film. Although spectators conjure up the image through film, it has a limitation to describe what is behind by itself but the soundtracks help film to overcome this limitation. In other words, soundtracks play a role as a supporter to understand the essence behind the film. Thus, the film is conveying whole theme through “Program music”, forming consistent image by applying “Leitmotif” and importing spectators’ sentiments at the flow by “source music”. Therefore, the roles of these series of film music have an aspect to give the additional impression and enrich the story of the movie, but the fundamental role of the music is the replacement effect againt film itself
