국문 초록

『소오강호 笑傲江湖』는 홍콩의 작가 김용(金庸)(1924- )이 1967년에서 1969년 사이에 홍콩의 일간지 명보 『명보 明報』에 연재한 무협소설이다. 소설은 주인공인 화산파의 대 제자 영호충이 무술비급을 차지하려는 악인들의 탐욕 사이에서, 그리고 오악검파(五嶽劍派)와 일월신교(日月神敎) 사이의 투쟁이라는 외형적 갈등 속에서 겪는 사랑의 이야기이다. 이들 두 집단의 이름은 중국 문화의 뿌리 깊은 철학 사상을 내포하고 있는데, 작가의 계산된 의도로 보인다. 태양과 달을 의미하는 이 ‘日月(yang yin)’은, 음과 양의 또 다른 서체인 阴과 阳에 나타나듯이, 음양의 대표적 형태로서, 중국에서 道(Dao), 氣(Qi) 그리고 生命의 또 다른 형태로 이해되었다. 五行說은 우주의 모든 사물이 木 火 土 金 水 의 다섯 가지 요소로 이루어져 있으며, 지구의 모든 물질들은 그러한 특성으로 분류될 수 있다는 사고방식이다. 각자 독자적으로 발생한 음양론과 오행론은 점차 조화를 이루기 시작하여 BC 2세기 경 결합되어 음양오행론으로 정립되었다. 작가는 이 종합적인 세계관을 두 갈등 집단에게 나누어 부여하였지만, 음양과 오행의 출발점이 太極이듯이 인간 삶에 발생하는 갈등의 뿌리가 동일하다고 주장하고 있는 것으로 보인다. 이렇게 우주를 하나의 ‘운영체계’로 이해하는 음양오행론은 인체를 이해하는 의학의 근본 원리가 되었다. 작품에서 초자연적 힘으로 나타나는 무술의 비법들이 그러한 음양오행에 근거한 한의학적 지식에 연계되는 것은 자연스런 과정이라 할 수 있겠다. 이렇게 소설의 서사구조는 철학, 의학, 무술, 인간 삶, 우주 등이 하나의 유기체적 관계에 있다고 말하고 있다.

영문 초록

Xiaoao Jianghu or The Smiling, Proud Wanderer is a Martial arts novel written by a Hong Kong writer, Jin Yong(1924-) and published serially between 1967 and 1969 by “Ming Pao,” a Hong Kong daily. It is a romance story of Linghu Chong, the hero and favorite disciple of Mount Hua Sect, who struggles with the desire of people to get possession of the Secret Book of Martial arts and the conflict between Five Mountain Sword Sects Alliance and Sun Moon Holy Cult. The names of the two groups contain the traditional philosophies of Chinese culture, which seems to have been intended by the author. Yin, or the moon and Yang, or the sun were considered to be different forms of Dao, Qi and life in China as represented more specifically in the Chinese characters, “阴” and “阳.” The Five Elements theory is a set of beliefs that the universe is composed of and classified into the five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. The Yin-Yang and the Five Elements theory, which were developed separately initially, gradually became harmonized and finally combined as one theory by the 2nd century BC. The author divided the comprehensive theory into two and attributed them to the opposing factions. However, he seems to argue that the source of all conflicts is shared by all humanity just as both Yin and Yang and the Five Elements stem from Taiji. The Yin-Yang and the Five Elements theory, which sees the universe as one “operating system” came to constitute the fundamental principle of Chinese medicine. It would be safe to assume that the Supernatural martial arts skills depicted in the novel is a corollary to the chinese medicinal knowledge based on the theory of Yin and Yang and the Five Elements. The narrative of the novel describes philosophy, medicine, martial arts, human life and the universe as parts of one organic entity.
