국문 초록

본고는 현대미술에서 상호 필수불가결한 요소로써 등장하는 색채와 물질의 역할과 의미에 대해 살펴보고 이들의 감성적 조형 언어로서의 그 가능성을 확인하는 데 연구의 목적이 있다. 인간과 다양한 방식으로 관계를 맺으며 복합적 구조체로써 존재하는 색채는 기존의 연구들을 통해 인간의 외부에서 지각되는 대상일 뿐 아니라 내부의 작용을 통해 생성되는 것임을 확인할 수 있다. 인간의 눈에서 색채가 인지되고, 그 색채를 통해 생성된 시각은 주관적인 경험을 상기시키며 특유의 정서를 불러일으킨다. 이 과정에서 색채를 지각하는 주체자의 중요성이 강조되며 색채는 그들의 감성과 내면세계에 직접적으로 영향력을 행사할 수 있는 요소가 된다. 색채와 결합하는 조형요소로써 물질은 목적을 위한 수단으로써의 개념에서 그 자체의 가치와 관념이 적극적으로 개입되며 이를 드러내는 물질로 확장된다. 물성은 스스로 형상을 만드는 주체자로서의 물질을 가능하게 만드는 요소가 되며 현대미술에서 표현의 다양성을 가져 온 요인이 된다. 아울러 이는 조형 활동의 전제라 할 수 있는 상상력의 원동력으로서의 역할을 하며 다층적인 접근과 해석을 가능하게 만든다. 색채와 물질의 통합은 형언하기 어려운 감성적인 세계를 표현하고 예술가와 감상자 사이에서 감정 전달의 매개체가 된다. 현대미술에서 색채와 물질이 가시적 세계와 비가시적 세계를 아우르는 조형 언어로서의 가치와 가능성을 확인하는데 이번 연구에 의의를 두고자 한다.

영문 초록

This study aims to examine the roles and significance of colors and material which are indispensable elements in modern art, and to identify their possibility as formative languages of emotion. We can verify colors, which form connections with humans in various ways and exist as a complex structure, are not only external objects that are perceived by human beings but they are also formed through processes that take place in the human mind. Colors are perceived by the human eye, and the viewpoint formed through the colors is reminiscent of subjective experiences and evokes unique emotions. In this process, the importance of the subject who perceives colors is emphasized, and colors become an element that can have direct influence on the subject’s emotions and inner world. As a formative element that combines with colors, material expands itself from a concept as a means for some purpose, to something that manifests itself through active intervention of its own values and concepts in the formative process. Properties of matter are a factor that enables ‘matter’ as the agent that forms shapes by itself, and they have brought diversity of expression in modern art. Properties of matter also act as the driving force of imagination, which is the premise of formative activity, and enable multi-layered approaches and interpretations. The integration of colors and matter expresses the world of emotions that is difficult to describe in words, and becomes the medium of communication of emotions between the artist and the viewer. The significance of this study lies in identifying the value and possibility of colors and matter as formative languages that encompass both the visible and invisible world in modern art.
