진계 박재형의 저술과 학문사적 위상

국문 초록

진계 박재형은 유지하려는 전통과 물밀듯이 들어오는 개화의 소용돌이 속에 휩쓸려있던 19세기말이라는 시대상황 속에서 활동하였던 유학자였다. 박재형은 어릴 때 정재 유치명을 스승으로 모셨으며, 커서는 성재 허전과 응와 이원조를 스승으로 모셨다. 퇴계 이황의 학문을 계승하였으며, 영남의 청도 지역에서 유학의 가르침을 실천하였다. 이전의 박재형에 대한 연구는 『해동속소학』과 『해동속고경중마방』에 대한 것이 대부분이다. 박재형은 기존의 알려진 저술 외에 매우 다양한 책을 저술하였는데 대부분은 장서각에 소장되어 있으며, 후손의 집이나 국립중앙도서관에 소장된 것도 있다. 이 논문에서는 이들 책을 모두 발굴하여 소재한 곳과 그 내용을 확인해 두었다. 발굴된 책을 바탕으로 박재형의 학문사적 위상을 정리하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 박재형은 선배 학자들의 글과 성리학 관련 책을 착실하게 수집하고 그 핵심된 내용을 요약하고 정리하는데 역점을 두었다. 둘째, 박재형은 아동 교육에 큰 관심을 가지고 있어 아동용 책을 저술하였을 뿐만 아니라 아이들의 훈육에 필요한 글을 모은 책도 편찬하였다. 셋째, 박재형의 저술을 보면 다양한 서인 학자들의 책도 참고하고 있어 학문에서의 당파성이 차츰 옅어지고 있다. 넷째, 박재형은 ‘해동(海東)’ 표제의 책을 편찬하고 있는데 이는 유학을 공부하였던 전통시대 지식인으로서 중국의 수준에까지 오른 조선 학문의 특질을 보이려는 생각에서 나온 것이다. 다섯째, 박재형은 ‘동학(東學)’과 ‘서학(西學)’과 같은 대내외적인 새로운 도전에 대응하는 방법으로 내적인 혁신을 시도하였으며 전통적으로 내려오는 도덕적인 학문과 교육을 굳건하게 지켜나가려고 하였다. 여섯째, 박재형은 현실문제에 대한 해결 방책에 있어서 전통지향적이었으며, 유교적인 방식으로 사회와 현실의 문제를 파악하고 해결하려고 하였다. 일곱째, 박재형은 외부의 제국주의 세력의 도전에 대한 대응 방략으로 유교의 정통론적, 위정척사적 사상을 기반으로 행동하였다. 이러한 특징은 박재형이 고종대 경상도의 지방 유학자가 가지고 있던 유학사상의 특징적인 모습을 대표적으로 보여준다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Jingye Park Jae-hyeong was a Confucian scholar who was active in the Gyeongsang-do region at the end of the 19th century. Park Jae-hyeong was taught by Jeongjae Yu Chi-myeong when he was young, and when he grew up, he had Seungjae Heo Jeon and Eungwa Lee Won-jo as his teachers. He learned and acquired Toegye Lee Hwang s disciplines, and he succeeded to them. He personally practiced the teachings of Confucianism in his hometown, Cheongdo. Previous studies on Park Jae-hyeong are mostly about 『Haedongsoksohak』 and 『Haedongsokgogyeongjungmabang』. Park Jae-hyeong wrote a wide variety of books in addition to his existing works known to us, most of them are housed in Jangseogak library, and some of them housed in the family of his descendants or the National Central Library. This study uncovered all of these books and confirmed where they are located and their contents. Based on the excavated books, Park Jae-hyeong s status in the academic history can be summarized as follows. First, Park Jae-hyeong steadily collected the writings of senior scholars and books related to Neo-Confucianism, and devoted all his efforts to summarizing the core contents. Second, Park Jae-hyeong was very interested in child education, and he not only authored children s books, but also compiled books that gathered the words that adults need to discipline their children. Third, in the writings of Park Jae-hyeong, he belonged to Namin faction, but as he variously referred to the books of Seoin faction scholars, the faction in the scholarship gradually came to fade. Fourth, Park Jae-hyeong was compiling a book on Korea, titled as Haedong, which came from his idea of・・ revealing the characteristics of Joseon scholarship matching the level of the scholarship in China. Fifth, Park Jae-hyeong attempted to make spiritual innovation as a way of responding to new internal and external challenges such as Donghak and Seohak, and he tried to keep up with the moral scholarship and education traditionally coming down. Sixth, Park Jae-hyeong took a tradition-oriented approach to solving real-world problems, and tried to identify and solve the problems of society and reality in a Confucian way. Seventh, Park Jae-hyeong acted as a way of countermeasure to the challenges of external imperialist forces, based on the Confucian orthodox, and the thought for the rejection of the wrong and the defense of the right. These characteristics are representative of the characteristic features of Confucian thoughts that Park Jae-hyeong, a Gyeongsang-do provincial Confucian scholar possessed in the Gojong period.
