갈라디아서 2장에 기록된 예루살렘 회의-안디옥 사건-바울의 칭의론은 초기 기독교 역사를 보여주는 훌륭한 자료들로서 그동안 수많은 학자들의 연구 대상이 되어 왔다. 개별 단락의 중요성은 물론이거니와 연이어 배치된 세 개의 사건들이 주는 의미에 대해 끊임없는 관심을 불러일으켜왔다. 하지만 각 사건들 사이에 어떠한 연관성을 갖고 있는지에 대한 구체적인 연구는 다소 부족했다고 판단된다. 이에 본 소고의 목적은 안디옥 사건을 중심으로 한 예루살렘 회의 그리고 바울의 칭의론이 갖는 의미상의 연관성을 주석 작업을 통하여 분석해 봄으로써, 이를 통해 바울이 자신의 논리를 어떻게 강화하고자 했는지를 확인하는 것이다. 두 개의 상반된 분위기가 예루살렘 회의와 안디옥 사건에서 각각 등장하게 되는데, 그 핵심 축은 갈라디아서 2장 5절과 14절에 등장하는 “복음의 진리”에 관한 문제였다. 2장 11-14절에 기록된 안디옥 사건에서 게바를 포함한 일행들이 ‘외식 행위’를 통하여 “복음의 진리”를 따르지 못한 일은 바울의 단호한 책망을 받게 되었다. 바울의 입장에서 볼 때, 그들의 모순된 행동은 곧 이방 그리스도인들을 ‘유대화하도록’ 강요하는 것과 같았기 때문이다. 이에 반해 2장 1-10절에 기록된 예루살렘 회의에서 사도들은 바울과 그 일행들이 “복음의 진리”를 유지할 수 있도록 허락하였는데, 이는 바울과 동행한 헬라인 디도에게도 할례를 강요하지 않았다는 점 그리고 바울에게 어떠한 의무도 부과하지 않았다는 점에서 드러나게 된다. 이는 바울 자신에게 있어서 매우 유용한 근거로 사용될 수 있는 상황이었는데, 곧 갈라디아의 여러 교회에 침투한 “다른 복음”을 전하는 “거짓 형제들” 곧 적대자들의 선전 행위에 적극적으로 맞서는 동시에 갈라디아 교인들의 ‘배교 행위’를 효과적으로 차단하기 위한 정당성을 부여받게 되었다는 결과물을 얻게 된 것이었다. 이상의 배경에서 바울은 자신의 입장을 더욱더 확고히 하기 위해, 예루살렘 회의와 안디옥 사건에 등장한 “복음의 진리”가 과연 무엇인지에 대해 자신의 칭의론(2:15-21)을 통해 응답하고자 하였다. 이는 곧 적대자들이 강요하는 율법의 행위가 공동체의 분열을 초래하는 것임을 분명하게 밝히며, ‘오직 그리스도 안에서, 그리스도의 믿음으로 말미암아’ 하나됨의 새로운 공동체를 추구해야 한다는 바울의 의도가 담겨있는 것이었다(갈

영문 초록

The article deals with the three main events in the Epistle to the Galatians 2: the Council of Jerusalem (2:1-10), the Incident at Antioch (2:11-14), and Justification by Faith (2:15-21). These events have been important in New Testament Studies in that each one takes its own worth to show the history of the early Christian community in the 1st century. However, there were only a few studies to illuminate the correlation of each event. It is quite obvious that the reason Paul edited these in a row is to emphasize his argument of the gospel he preached as well as his God-imparted apostleship. Some antagonists have seduced the Galatian believers (Gentile Christians) to a different gospel which is imposing the law of Moses. Besides, they challenged the gospel and apostleship of Paul. The aim of this article is to research the close relationship between the Council of Jerusalem and the Incident at Antioch and between the Incident at Antioch and Justification by Faith. The key concept which is able to connect the three events is “the truth of the gospel” (2:5, 2:14). Firstly, this paper shows that the obeying of “the truth of the gospel” was a concept used by the Council of Jerusalem. Gentile delegates (Paul, Barnabas, and even Titus) had kept their faith against circumcision and argues against what some false brothers had said in favour of it. Secondly, it shows that the disobeying of “the truth of gospel” was a part of the Incident at Antioch. Paul decidedly opposed the hypocrisy of Cephas (including other Jewish Christians and even Barnabas). Cephas regrettably made a fatal mistake in drawing back and separating himself from Gentiles at table in Antioch. Lastly, Paul tried to explain the meaning of “the truth of the gospel” to unite Jewish Christians and Gentile Christians. In this circumstance, he got to proclaim the Justification by Faith as a solution in Christ.
