황순원 소년소설과 경계성의 의미고찰

국문 초록

이 논문은 황순원 소년소설의 인물성격과 주제를 분석하면서 소년소설이 가지는 경계성의 의미를 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 황순원은 숭실 중학교 재학 중인 소년기에 소년소설을 발표하면서 문학 활동을 시작한다. 그의 문학 활동 전체 과정을 보면 시 쓰기에서 소설쓰기로 옮겨가는 전후에 소년소설을 발표하였는데, 15세에 숭덕소학교를 졸업하고 20세에 와세다 대학 제 2고등학원 입학 이전인 경계에 위치했던 시기이고, 시에서 소설로 옮겨가는 경계에 있을 때 소년소설을 집필한 것이다. 이번 논문은 이런 점에 착안하여 황순원의 소년소설과 경계성의 의미를 두 가지 방향에서 고찰하고자 하는 것이다. 먼저 소년기에 집필한 소년소설의 주제는 그 이후 창작 전반에 어떻게 나타났으며 어떠한 영향을 미쳤는지 살펴보고자 하는 것이 우선적인 목적이다. 다음으로 시에서 소설로 옮겨가는 과정에 소년소설이 개입되어 있는데, 이 경계성의 의미를 작가 작품론적 관점으로 규명해보고자 하는 것이다. 황순원의 소년소설로는 ｢추억｣과 ｢졸업일｣ 두 편이 있고, 초기 단편소설 ｢별｣과 ｢닭 祭｣도 소년소설 범위에 포함시킬 수 있다. 황순원의 소년소설의 인물의 특성은 세 가지 방향으로 나타난다. 먼저 모성애적 사랑을 희구하면서 일시적인 퇴행양상을 보여 주었고, 다음으로 가난에 대응해서 이기려는 의지를 보여준다. 마지막으로 누나의 죽음과 자신이 아끼던 생명체의 죽음에 직면하면서 경계지점에 위치해 있는 소년의 불안정함을 그대로 보여주면서 비로소 현실을 직시하는 의식과 행동양식을 보 여준다. 이와 같은 소년소설 인물의 행동양식과 주제는 이후 황순원의 장, 단편 소설에 확장되어 반영되는 것을 찾아낼 수 있다. 즉 소년소설 ｢추억｣에서 화염 속에서 주인집 아들 영일을 구해내는 경숙의 모습은 이후 장편소설 [카인의 후예]에서 오작녀가 산불을 낸 지주의 아들 어린 박 훈을 구해내는 장면과 거의 흡사하게 일치되는 면이 있다. 이렇게 보면 소년소설의 인물은 이후 소설문학 전반에 걸쳐 원형적 인물로 등장하는 장면들을 확인하게 되며, 현실인식 문제도 사실적 리얼리즘 구현으로 나 타나는 것을 알 수 있었다. 소년소설에서 구현한 미의식과 작가의식은 장, 단편 소설에서 재현되어 작가정신의 영속성을 보여주었다. 또 이니시에이션 소설에서 분리(separation)-전이(translation)-결합(incorporation)의 심리적 변화과정은 황순원이 시 창작으로 시작하여 소년소설을 발표하고 그리고 장편 소설로 이행되는 작가의 삶의 과정에서 거의 재현되는 특 이성을 발견할 수 있다는 점에서 황순원에게 소년소설이라는 장르가 가지는 경계성의 의미는 매우 특별하게 볼 수 있는 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to identify the meaning of borderline by investigating the novel for boys by Hwang Sunwon. The novel for boys is a genre of novels which considers those between childhood and adults in the growth process as the problematic existence. Hwang Sunwon published the novel for boys during his boyhood while in Sungsil Middle School. In other words, he published the novel for boys while he changed his writing from poems to novels in his entire literary life. He graduated Sungdeok Elementary School at 15 years old and published the novel for boys before entering into the 2nd High School in the Waseda University when he was 20 years old. The period he published the novel for boys was when he was at the borderline between a teenager and an adult. Moreover, he showed the specific career by publishing the novel for boys when he was at the borderline changing his literary activity from poems to novels. As paying attention to his specific career above, this paper tried to examine the novel for boys by Hwang Sunwon and the meaning of borderline in two aspects. The first purpose of this study is to identify the contribution of and impact of the themes found in the novel for boys which Hwang Sunwon published during his boyhood on the earlier period of his literary life since then. Next, this study tries to clarify the meaning of borderline on the viewpoint from the study on the writer because the novel for boys by Hwang Sunwon was in the process of change from poems to novels. Hwang Sunwon published two novels for boys, “Memory” and “Graduation Date”, and “Star” and “Chicken ”, the short stories in his earlier literary life, can be also classified into the scope of novel for boys. The features of themes in the novel for boys by Hwang Sunwon were found in three ways. The first feature is the character restoring the mental stability as regressing by maternal love. The second feature is the character showing the wills to fight against and overcome poverty. The last feature is the character facing up to the reality only by facing the death of a sister and the death of a life which he cherished. It is found that the subject awareness in the novel for boys is reflected in the full-length novel by Hwang Sunwon since his boyhood. More specifically, the scene which Gyeongsuk saved Yeongil, her master’s son, from fire in the ‘Memory’, the novel for boys, is almost similar to the scene which Ojangnyeo saved Bak Hun, the landlord’s son who made the forest sire, in the full-length novel ‘Descendant of Cain’. Furthermore, this study found the specific common feature that the psychological change from separation through translation to incorporation in the initiation novel is much like the change of literary life of Hwang Sunwon who started the literary life by writing the poems, published the novel for boys and finally published full-life stories. The creative work by Hwang Sunwon writing the novel for boys was the period to build the narrative themes in the aspect above and the period of borderline for the test of the suggestive process and further growth in the viewpoint from the study on the writer. Therefore, the meaning of the borderline found in the novel for boys by Hwang Sunwon is very significant.
