빅토리아 후기 여성운동의 ‘디딤돌’

국문 초록

랑엄 플레이스 서클은 1850년대에서 1860년대의 여성 권리 운동과 사회개혁을 대표하는 여성 조직체로서 빅토리아 사회가 갖고 있던 여성관련 논의를 활발히 전개한 여성 운동가들의 모임이다. 이 서클은 여성들이 가정이라는 닫힌 공간으로 부터 권위와 존재를 인정받을 수 있는 열린 공간으로 이동할 수 있도록 노력하였다. 여성문제의 토론을 위한 교류 장소를 제공했고, 여성들이 직면했던 사회적 제한 및 여성 지위에 관한 이해와 관심의 공유를 위한 소통을 이끌어갔다. 또 여성들을 위한 교육의 개선, 전문직으로의 진입, 고용 기회의 확장을 위해 다양한 협회들을 출범시켰다. 그러나 서클의 활동은 중산층이란 당대 사회의식이 제한하는 범위에 국한되지 않았다. 이 서클의 여성을 위한 개혁운동은 특정 계층의 여성이 아니라 ‘여성(woman)’을 위한 것이었기 때문이다. 당대의 여성들은 빅토리아 제국의 정치권력 세력 구조에 존재하지 않았고, 당연히 의회 구성원도 아니었다. 하지만, 랑엄 플레이스 서클은 여성문제(Woman Question)가 의회와 언론에서 공론화되도록 했고, 이는 여성 정치 운동의 기초를 제공하는 족적을 남기는 것이었다. 그러므로 본고는 랑엄 플레이스 서클이 19세기말에서 20세기 페미니스트들의 역동적인 활동으로의 연결고리를 형성해 준다는 중요성을 부여하고자 한다.

영문 초록

This study attempts to contribute to Korean feminism studies by bringing up a better understanding on the Victorian reform movement for women by the Langham Place Circle. The Langham Place Circle is a women’s club to conduct social reform campaigns during the period of 1850s through 1860s, especially for improving woman’s rights and social status. It actively involved in the discussion on woman questions within Victorian sociocultural context. And the members attempted to provide extensive opportunities of the open space guaranteeing their authority and identity. They offered a reading room for woman to discuss and exchange opinions on woman issues, and launched various organizations and societies for the woman campaigns. The circle made continuous efforts to improve women’s education and expand women’s employment opportunities in the professions. Through the journal they facilitated women’s communication to share their understanding and interest on women’s social status and the social restriction women faced to. Their activities were not limited in the scope of the middle class experiences in the sense that the crusades and activities initiated by the Langham Place Circle through various organizations were not for ladies of specific (or limited) classes but for woman in general. Even if women of the time were not existent in the Victorian political power structure nor in the Parliament, the circle raised woman issues publicly in the media and the House of Parliament. The circle is considered to provide foundations for women’s political movements followed subsequently and to form a link in the active feminists movement in the late 19th and the early 20th century.
