국문 초록

구비서사문학은 문자로 기록되어 있는 경우도 있으나, 말로 전승되는 것이 기본적인 성격이다. 구비서사문학의 한 장르인 전설은 역사적 인물과 사건에 직결되어서 다소간의 변용은 있다 손치더라도 언제나 역사적 신빙성을 주장하고 있다. 왜냐하면 유령과 같은 비현실적인 인물들에 관한 이야기를 하는 전설들도 최소한 이야기를 전하는 이들의 믿음을 확보하고 있기 때문이다. 전설은 문학적 연구와 역사적 연구가 함께 가능하다. 구비역사의 전형이라고 할 수 있는 헝가리 전설은 이미 오래 전부터 역사적 자료의 여러 종류 가운데 특별한 영역을 점유하고 있는 것으로 인정되고 연구되고 있다. 하인리히 슐리만(Heinrich Schliemann)은 그리스 일대를 탐사하면서 호메로스의 『일리아스』와 관련된 유적들을 탐구하여, 트로이 폐허인 소아시아의 히살리크 언덕을 발굴, 유적이라는 것을 확인하여 학계를 놀라게 하였다. 역사학의 영역을 어디까지 확대해야 할지 분명히 한정할 수 없으나, 과거의 문학을 이해하는 것은 그 시대의 역사를 이해하는 것이다. 헝가리 전설이 지니고 있는 역사적 사실이 타당성을 지니는가 하는 점은 여러 각도로 검증되어야 한다. 헝가리 전설의 사료적 타당성 검증은 역사적 연구의 가능성 여부를 판별하기 위한 것이 아니라, 연구의 방향을 잡기 위한 자료 이해와 관계되는 것이다. 때문에 본 연구에서는 헝가리 전설이 지닌 문학성과 역사성의 기본적인 관계를 중심으로 살펴보면서 전설의 역사적 연구의 필요성과 가능성 및 그 방향을 검토해보았다.

영문 초록

A part of the epic folk-poetry has been preserved in writing, another part has been passed on from generation to generation by word of mouth. Legend is an epic genre of folk poetry, which is in connection with a real phenomenon, but often uses miraculous elements to talk about its origins and beliefs about the person and place in question. The legends of different nations started to be gathered, processed, occasionally compemented in the 19th century. Legends primarily talk about historical traditions from the golden age of the given community. Legends can be examined from a literary or historical point of view. A possible way of research can be the method of passing it by word of mouth. A large part of the significant representatives of western historians like to use these epic legends as historical sources. This method was perhaps the most remarkably used by Schliemann, when he, based on Homer`s works, explored the Grecian world and found Troy and Mycenae where they were placed in word-of-mouth legends. In this study I did examine to what extent Hungarian legends can be used as historical sources. What are the dangers that lurk at researchers of this topic? It cannot be denied that such a path is full of traps. I am convinced, however, of the importance of word-of-mouth legends used as historical source, because in my opinion epic folk-poetry works can be important source works in special fields of the science of history. During my research my attention was focussed on Hungarian legends. The question is, to what extent can these be used as historic source? What can they add to the research?
