Greek influence on the burial customs of the local communities in the Magna Graecia (8th-5th century BC)

국문 초록

기원전 800년 이래, 그리스인들이 그리스의 도시들에서 남부이탈리아와 시실리로 넘어와 식민지를 개척하고 거주를 시작한 것은, 후에 마그나 그라에키아로 알려진 이 지역 공동체 안에서의 중요한 문화적 변화들 때문이다. 그리스 정착민들 혹은 식민지 개척자들은 단독으로 문화변용을 하였기 때문에 그 지역들 사이에서 종종 문화적으로 우세한 듯 보였다. 특히 매장품을 보면 그 지역민들이 그리스와 동부 지중해 지역에서 대량으로 들여온 수입품들을 포함하고 있다. 보통 한 지역에서 매장하는 관습은 특정 지역의 문화적 정체성을 비춰주는 중요한 부분으로 여겨진다. 그러므로 특정 시간이 지난 뒤에 고고학적인 관점으로 무덤들을 조사하는 것은 그 공동체의 중요한 문화적 영향들을 추적할 수 있는 하나의 방법이 된다. 본고는 대응분석 통계를 사용하여 기원전 5-8세기 사이의 마그나 그라에키아와 에게 해역 군도의 매장관습을 연구한다. 그리고 이러한 접근방법은 그리스 문화가 아마도 마그나 그라에키아의 인구에 강력한 영향을 행사했다는 확신을 주며, 이 지역의 집단 간, 문화적 상호관계의 발전상을 관찰토록 한다. 제 3기에 걸쳐 수행된 본 연구의 결과는 마그나 그라에키아 지역이 그리스적인 요소들을 포함하고 있지만, 사실상 이 지역의 인구는 광범위하고 신속하게 그리스 장례 문화에 조정되지는 않았다는 사실을 보여준다.

영문 초록

The permanent presence of colonists from Greek cities in South Italy and Sicily (the Magna Graecia) from ca. 800 BC was undoubtedly the cause for essential cultural changes within the local communities of that regions. The Greek settlers or colonists are often seen as culturally advanced and as source of unilateral acculturation among the locals. The burials seem to support that notion, since they partly contain high amounts of imported goods of Greek and east Mediterranean origin. Burial customs are usually considered to reflect a crucial part of the cultural identity of a community. Observing the archaeologically graspable aspects of graves over a particular time span is therefore a way to trace significant cultural impacts on a certain community. The present article examines the burial customs of the Magna Graecia and regions of the Aegean Archipelago between the 8th and 5th century BC with help of the statistical method of correspondence analysis. This approach allows not only to ascertain the intensity of the impact of Greek culture on the population of the Magna Graecia, but also the observation of cultural interrelations and their development among the local communities. The results of the examination carried out for three points in time suggest that the local population, despite the inclusion of particular Greek elements, did not adjust at large or very quick to Greek funerary customs.
