국문 초록

브레스트합병을 통해 동서교회는 분열 542년만에 하나의 교회를 만드는데 성공하였다. 그러나 이는 루시 지역에 한정된 것으로 그 후 루시 지역의 종교와 문화, 정치와 경제에 지대한 영향을 미치고, 벨라루스와 우크라이나를 러시아와 폴란드와 구별짓는 중요한 변수로 작용하였다. 그러나 이를 성립시킨 브레스트 공의회가 현지 관구장과 주교들에 의해서만 추진되었던 것이기에, 동서교회간의 갈등과 반목이 해소된 것이 아니라, 본격적으로 루시 지역을 둘러싼 가톨릭과 정교회간의 경쟁을 표면화하였다. 이는 결국 폴란드-리투아니아연방에서 우니아트교회로의 강제 개종과 가톨릭화, 그리고 그 후 제정러시아에서 우니아트 탄압과 정교회화라는 불행한 역사를 예정하고 있었던 것이다. 또한 정교회 내부의 분열을 유발하여 루시 사회를 민족과 종교를 하나의 축으로 하여 발전할 수 있는 가능성을 저해하는 요인으로 되었던 동시에, 다른 한편으로 이를 둘러싼 논쟁이 루시 지역의 지식문화를 발전시켜 이 지역이 당시 모스크바와 전혀 다른 정신풍토를 양성하는 계기로 되었다.

영문 초록

The Uniate church, which was established in Brest (1596), had a decisive effect on religion and culture, as well as politics and economy in Ruthenia ever afterward. The Brest synod was initiated by Ruthenian local bishops of orthodox church. The participation of the patriarch of Moscow and All Russia was completely excluded from the beginning, and the local orthodox szlachta and bratstvo decided against taking part in the synod. So that it was not a creation of a unified church to integrate doctrines and liturgies. Orthodox bishops had acted from realistic motives to promote their political and economical interests which was damaged in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth by the consent with the Polish king and Catholic hierarch. What its conclusions were to keep the orthodox liturgies under the condition of acceptance of the catholic doctrines. The former was a preservation of Ruthenian traditions, but the condition signified a catholicization and polandization of Ruthenian society. As a result, conflict and confrontation between catholic and orthodox powers were preordained, such as, the forced conversions to uniate church and catholicization in the Commonwealth, and suppression of uniate church and orthodoxization after the collapse of the Commonwealth in the period of Tsar Russia. In the context of the inside matters of orthodox church, the Brest synod was opened on the basis of the viewpoints on that all the problems of church should be solved within church hierarch, but the ordinary believed they have a right to engage in the problems. The subsequent heated controversy and argument caused the conflict and struggle to hinder the development of national identity, and on the other hand, invigorated the intellectual activities of Ruthenians to distinguish them from Moscow.
