국문 초록

본 논문은 영어 원어민들이 겪는 사회문화적 갈등에 대한 후속 연구 논문이다. 기존 연구 결과에 따르면, 영어 원어민들은 개별 한국인에 대해서는 대체로 긍정적 인식을 지니고 있으나 학교, 기관, 대기업 등에서 근무하는 한국인들에 대해서는 적잖이 부정적 인식을 가지고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 다른 관련 연구 결과 또한 다소 차이는 있으나 한국인에 대한 부정적 인식에 있어서는 기존 연구 결과와 대동소이 했다. 본 논문은 한국에 대한 서양인의 인식에 초점을 맞추었던 기존의 논문들과는 달리 한국에 대한 서양인의 인식을 한국인의 관점에서 조명했다. 본 논문의 연구 결과에 따르면, 한국인들은 논리적 또는 이성적이기 보다는 감성적 측면이 강한 국민들로 인식되고 있다. 타 유색인종에 대한 차별의식이 있어 이에 대한 개선이 필요하며, 한국고유문화 보존과 새로운 문화 수용 간 균형을 유지할 필요가 있다. 한국인의 민족주의적 정서는 국제적 관점에서 사안을 바라보는데 걸림돌이 될 수도 있으므로 이에 대한 재고가 필요하다. 한국에 대한 서양인들의 부정적 인식은 쌍방 간 언어 소통이 원활하지 못한데서 기인되는 경우가 많을 수 있으므로 이에 대한 심도 있는 연구가 필요하다. 향후 초 국가화 시대가 예상되므로 문화 간 상호 이해 증진을 위해 관련 주제에 대한 후속 연구 노력이 계속되어야 한다.

영문 초록

This is a follow-up study of previous studies that investigated sociocultural conflicts of westerners in Korea. According to the studies, westerners have positive perceptions of Koreans on a personal level, but negative of Koreans in such organizations as governmental offices, academic institutions, or big companies. Unlike the previous studies merely describing westerners’ perceptions of Korea, this study focuses on Korean perspectives on westerners’ perceptions of Korea. According to this study, Koreans are considered rather emotional than rationalistic or logical. Koreans’ discriminatory attitude against colored people should be corrected. Koreans need to have balance between preserving its own culture and embracing other cultures. Koreans need to try to develop broad international perspectives. Westerners’ negative perceptions of Korea seem to often stem from language communication problems, and in-depth studies on this area need to be carried out. Trans-nationalization is expected in coming years, and therefore continuous efforts should be made for further study on this topic to help promote better intercultural understanding.
