아일랜드 대중문화에 나타난 전통과 아일랜드성의 문제

국문 초록

1994년 4월 30일 유로비전 노래 콘테스트(The Eurovision Song Contest)의 막간 공연으로 첫 선을 보인 <리버댄스>는 현재 아일랜드의 대표적인 문화 상품이다. <리버댄스>는 매년 전 세계의 어느 한 도시에서 공연되어왔고, 여전히 아일랜드의 전통을 세계에 널리 알리는 매체로 인식되고 있다. <리버댄스>는 그런 점에서 전통 문화의 혁신과 확립, 문화의 상품화, 민족적 정체성에 대한 이해에 있어 중요한 통로라고 할 수 있다. <리버댄스>는 일반적으로 총 18장으로 구성되어 있는데 각각은 개별적 내용을 담고 있어 일관된 서사를 보여준다고 할 수는 없다. 또한 플라맹고, 동유럽의 스텝 댄스, 미국의 탭 댄스 등 다양한 문화적 요소들을 수용하여 보여준다는 특징도 가지고 있다. 과연 아일랜드의 전통을 잘 나타내고 있는가에 대한 의문이 여기서 발생한다. 그럼에도 불구하고 <리버댄스>가 큰 인기를 얻고 있는 것은 게일 연맹에 의해 만들어진 가상의 아일랜드성을 거부하고 아일랜드의 전통을 재창조함으로써 보편성을 획득했기 때문이라고 할 수 있다. <리버댄스>에 대한 비판으로는 지나친 상업성을 들 수 있다. 형식적으로는 브로드웨이의 라인 댄스를 도입했을 뿐만 아니라, 내용적으로는 아일랜드가 겪은 암울한 역사, 즉 아일랜드의 독립 운동이나 기근으로 숨진 과거 조상들의 모습들을 의도적으로 배제하는 태도는 아일랜드의 역사와 현실을 외면하고 있다는 비판을 받기에 충분해 보인다. 특히 <리버댄스>의 아류라 할 수 있는 <로드 오브 더 댄스>의 경우는 민족주의와 아메리칸 드림을 이용해 상업적 성공을 거두었다는 오명을 벗어날 수 없을 것이다. <리버댄스>는 1973년 유럽공동체에 가입하면서 시작된 아일랜드 문화부흥의 연장선에 놓여 있다. 1990년대 10년 동안 유래 없는 경제 성장을 한 아일랜드는 그 결과 ‘켈트의 호랑이’로 불리게 된다. 또한 미국으로의 이주 이후 겪었던 열등한 민족이라는 이미지를 벗어나 미국 내에서 점차 높은 사회적 지위를 차지한 아일랜드인들은 자신들의 사회적 위치에 들어맞는 문화를 필요로 하게 된다. 바로 이때 <리버댄스>가 이들의 요구를 충족시켜주었던 것이다. 즉 <리버댄스>가 거둔 상업적 성공은 문화적으로, 또 경제적으로 세계무대에서 자리를 잡은 아일랜드의 위상을 상징적으로 보여주는 현상인 것이다.

영문 초록

〈Riverdance〉 was performed as a intersession show for The Eurovision Song Contest which took place on April 30th in 1994 and then established as Ireland’s representative cultural product. It has been performed in a certain city in the world every year and played a role of introducing Ireland to the world. 〈Riverdance〉 is an important instrument in understanding the innovation and establishment of traditional culture, commercialization of culture and national identity. 〈Riverdance〉 is usually composed of 18 chapters which contains mutually individual content, failing to show a consistent narration. In addition, it is characterized by the inclusion of various cultural elements such as Flamango, Eastern European step dance, U.S. tap dance, As a result, it is questionable whether 〈Riverdance〉 can be a representation of Irish tradition. Nonetheless, 〈Riverdance〉 enjoys still huge population in the world because it refused the imaginary Irishness created by Gail League and recreated the Ireland’s tradition which allows for it to obtain the universality. A criticism of 〈Riverdance〉 is that it is too excessive commercialized. Its attitude of introducing actively the 〈line dance of Broadway〉 but excluding the Ireland’s dismal history such as Independent Movement from The U.K or serious death toll due to the great famine draws the criticism, that it, ignoring the history and the reality. In particular, 〈Lord of The Dance〉 can’t escape from disgrace that it won commercial success exploiting the Nationalism and American Dream. 〈Riverdance〉 is situated in the background of cultural revival starting from 1973 when Ireland joined the European Union. Ireland started to be called ‘Centic Tiger’ after experiencing unprecedented successful economic growth over the 1990’s. In addition, the Irish who had suffered from the image of being inferior people in the new world of US but overcame from the image and finally secured high social position ask new culture corresponding to their new social position. Right at the moment 〈Riverdance〉 appeared to satisfy the demands of Irish people. That is, the commercial success of 〈Riverdance〉 shows symbolically the high position of Ireland which achieved culturally and economically huge success.
