노르만 정복이 영국과 유럽에 끼친 언어와 문화적 영향

국문 초록

유럽의 북서쪽에 해적이었던 데인족들은 프랑코 왕국에 정착하여 그 곳에 노르망디 공국의 세웠다. 그들은 1066년에 영국을 침략하여 영국의 국왕인 해롤드를 죽이고, 윌리엄이 영국의 국왕이 되었다. 3백 년 동안 게르만어인 영어가 라틴어에 속하는 프랑스어의 영향을 지속적으로 받게 되었다. 이러한 사건 혹은 기간을 노르만 정복이라고 부른다. 노르만 정복 기간에 언어적으로 이질적인 프랑스어가 영어에 침투해 들어옴으로써 영어의 역사는 단절된 것처럼 보인다. 그러나 노르만 정복을 기점으로 시작되는 중세 영어시기에 영어의 어휘는 급격히 증가되고 후기에 이르러서는 영어의 정체성을 찾으려는 노력이 일어났다. 노르만 정복은 문화적 측면에서 보면 영국의 분열을 가속화시켰고 이러한 상황은 오늘날 스코틀랜드와 아일랜드가 영연방으로부터 독립을 요구하는 주장을 피게 되었다. 그러나 이러한 문화적 차이를 해결하고 수용하며 통화시키려는 노력을 통해 영국은 민주적이고 창조적이며 마침내 전 세계의 최강자가 되었다. 또한 노르만족들은 남부 이탈리아와 시실리 왕국에 정착하였다. 그들은 자신들의 정체성을 지키면서 유럽문화에 적응하였다. 문화적 혼합주의를 통해 그들은 자신들의 독특한 개성과 문화를 발전시켰고 유럽사회의 주류로 성장하였다. 본 논문은 영국의 경우 정치와 언어적 관계를 통해, 유럽의 경우 사람의 이름을 예로 들며 정치와 문화적 관계를 통해 노르만 정복이라는 정치적 사건이 영국과 유럽에 미친 언어와 문화적 영향을 설명하였다.

영문 초록

Danes, pirates Vikings in the northwestern part of Europe, settled in Kingdom of Franco and founded the Principality of Normandy. They invaded England in 1066 and killed King Harold, the king of England. William the Conqueror became the King of England, and for three hundred years English, a Germanic language, continued to be influenced by French, a Latin language. We call this incident or period Norman Conquest. At the time of Norman Conquest, linguistically, as heterogeneous French encroached upon English, the history of English seems to be disconnected. However, the period of Middle English, just starting from Norman Conquest, saw the sharp increase of the vocabulary and the effort to find the identity of English language itself in the latter of the period. Norman Conquest accelerated the breakup of United Kingdom in cultural point of view, and this situation appears up to now as the request of independence of Scotland and Ireland. But the effort to deal with, accommodate and unify this cultural differences makes United Kingdom democratic and creative, and finally the superpower in the world. In addition, Normans naturally settled in the Kingdom of Southern Italy and Sicily. They kept their identity and adapted to the European culture. In the cultural syncretism, they could develop their individuality and culture and become a mainstream in the European society. This paper describes the linguistic and cultural effect of Norman Conquest on the United Kingdom and Europe, elaborating the relation between political events and linguistic practices in the United Kingdom and the relation between political events and cultural realities through the names Europeans and Normans used at that time.
