제국의 대학인가, 민족의 대학인가?

국문 초록

본 연구는 카렐 4세의 프라하대학의 설립 목적을 적시하고 있는 설립 헌장을 분석하여 카렐의 대학 설립 의도를 파악하고자 했다. 이를 위해 프라하대학 설립과 관련한 교황 클레멘스 6세의 서신, 프라하대학 설립 헌장, 아이제나흐 칙서를 면밀하게 분석하였다. 분석 결과 카렐의 프라하대학 설립 목적은 보헤미아 왕국의 번영과 백성들의 문화적 수준을 높이기 위한 민족적 성격에서 비롯되었다는 것이 밝혀졌다. 그리고 아이제나흐 칙서는 프라하대학의 위상을 높이고자 카렐이 독일인 견제를 위한 목적에서 비롯된 교서라는 사실이 확인되었고, 이 칙서를 통해 프라하대학의 설립 목적이 카렐의 민족의식과 애국주의의 발로였다는 중요한 단서 역시 포착되었다. 본고는 체코 역사의 중요 분기점이 되는 프라하대학의 설립 의도와 그 의미를 고찰하고 대학사에서 차지하고 있는 프라하대학의 위상을 재고하였다.

영문 초록

This study examined Karel’s intention by analyzing the foundation charter which shows the purpose of establishment of Prague University of Karel IV. To this end, I carefully analyzed the consenting letter of Pope Clement VI concerning the establishment of the University of Prague, the Foundation Charter of the University of Prague, the Decree of Eisenach. As a result of the analysis, Karel’s goal of establishing the University of Prague was to prove the prosperity of the kingdom of Bohemia and the strong national character of the people in order to raise the cultural level. In addition, the Decree of Eisenach was informed that Karel had promised to check the Germans to improve the status of the University of Prague. He also stated that the purpose of establishing the University of Prague through the Bills was to promote Karel’s national consciousness and patriotism respectively. This paper considers the intention and meaning of Karel’s establishment of the University of Prague as an important turning point in Czech history, and reconsidered the status of the University of Prague, which occupies Western university history.
