국문 초록

본고는 20세기 전환기 영국에서 이민 규제 등의 상황, 혁명과 망명이 시대를 뒤 흔들던 때, 러시아문화에 대한 열기가 함께 확산되었음을 주목하고 있다. 정치적 이해관계 및 문화외교라는 관점에서 영국의 친러시아적 행보에 따른 영국내 러시아문화의 확산을 관찰한다. 이 과정에서 본 연구는 영국의 러시아 문화에 대한 열정은 일차적으로 두 나라가 가졌던 정치 · 외교적인 긴장 속의 산물이었다는 것, ‘러시아에 대해 알아야 한다’는 목적성, 독일에 버금가는 문화유산 소재국으로서 동맹국 러시아를 강조할 목적성이 내포되었음을 확인한다. 이와 더불어 러시아문화가 영국 문화계에 진보지향적 모더니즘의 원천을 전수받는 기회를 제공했음을 발견하고 있다. 결과적으로 러시아 문화예술의 독특함이 영국의 자유로운 풍토에서 ‘러시아 열기’를 이어가도록 했고, 모더니즘예술의 자생력과 함께 대중이 지지하는 문화를 정치외교 문맥이 쉽사리 전복시키지 못한다는 문화정치학의 행보를 강조한다.

영문 초록

This paper focuses on the spread of enthusiasm for Russian culture in British Society at the turn of the 20th century when immigration regulations, foreign violences & chaos, and revolutions & exiles have shaken the times. Until the first half of the Victorian era, Russia was regarded as an underdeveloped country ruled by the autocracy. However, this negative thinking on Russia has become encountered the phase of change in the late 19th century. This study here examines the proliferation of Russian culture in Britain following the British pro-Russian paths from the viewpoint of political interests and cultural diplomacy. In this process, this study shows that the British passion for Russian culture was, at the first hand, a result of the political and diplomatic tensions that the two countries have had. And it confirms that the pro–Russian cultural intention was based on the purpose of ‘to know about Russia,’ first and on the intention to emphasize the ally Russia with cultural heritage next to Germany. In addition to this, it discovers Russian culture recognized to be represented ’barbarism’ and ‘wild’ in the first half of the 19th-century British society, has provided an opportunity to receive a source of more influential progressive modernism with more power than just ‘Orientalism.’ Thus the uniqueness of Russian culture and art, which has a “primitive”, “pure”, and “future-oriented” and radical experimental spirit, apart from political movements after the Russian Revolution, made sustain the Russomania in the free climate of the British Society. And it emphasizes that it is a unique path of cultural politics that the political diplomatic context does not easily overturn the cultural foundation that is the will of the people together and supports.
