국문 초록

이 연구는 마케도니아군의 군사개혁의 특징을 군사적인 관점에서 고찰하고 그 성과를 점검한 것으로 그 개혁이 일반적인 그리스 군대와 비교하여 어떠한 차이를 가져왔는지 분석하였다. 연구결과 마케도니아군은 무기체계를 획기적으로 발전시켰으며 중기병을 육성하여 당시 전장의 강자로 군림해오던 중장보병의 밀집 방진을 공격할 수 있게 되었다. 마케도니아군은 다른 그리스 지역의 군대와 달리 여러 가지 다양한 상황에 따라 다양한 작전을 수행할 수 있는 융통성을 지니고 있었다. 또한 마케도니아군은 국가 재정에 의해 장비를 지급하는 방식과 확대 발전된 왕립 군사학교를 통해 표준적인 장비로 군대를 무장시킬 뿐만 아니라 양질의 병력 자원을 지속적으로 확충할 수 있었다. 마케도니아의 군사개혁은 주변의 우수한 기술과 제도를 도입하되 고유한 특성을 유지하였으며 그 결과 마케도니아군이 고대 그리스 세계는 물론 전 세계에서 가장 탁월한 군대로 성장할 수 있었다. 이 연구는 필립 II세가 주로 달성한 군사개혁이 알렉산더 대왕에게 세계를 정복할 수 있는 전투효율성이 높은 군대를 제공하였음을 군사력 건설과 군사력 운용의 관점에서 설명하였다.

영문 초록

This paper explores the distinctions of the ancient Macedonian military reform and checks the fruits of the reform. In addition, the paper analyses the different characteristics of the newly reformed Macedonian army compared to other Hellenistic armies. The paper argues that the Macedonian army developed weapon systems and gained military prowess by destroying hoplite phalanx using heavy cavalry. Unlike ordinary Hellenistic armies, the Macedonian army was able to retain flexibility to deal with various situations. Moreover, the Macedonian logistic system supporting arms to soldiers from national treasury and Royal Page, royal education system guaranteed the army the stable supply of qualified soldiers equipped with standard arms. Philip II conducted his reform by combining foreign advanced technology and systems with inherent Macedonian situation. This resulted in the great success of the Macedonian army not only in the Greek society but in the entire world. This paper shed light on Phiplip II’s reform in terms of providing military foundation to the success of Alexander the Great.
