정몽주의 언양(彦陽) 적거(謫居)와 울산 구강(鷗江)·반구(盤龜)서원의 설립

국문 초록

본 논문은 정몽주를 배향하는 여러 서원 중에, 울산의 구강서원과 언양의 반구서원에 대해 검토한 것이다. 서원은 향촌사림의 여론을 수렴하는 일차적 거점이었다는 점에서 붕당정치가 본격화되는 17세기중반 이후 그 역할 은 증대되었다. 또한 향촌사림은 붕당정치의 전개과정 속에서 고립을 면하기 위한 중앙 정치세력과의 연계와 나아가 자신들의 향촌활동을 위한 거점으로서 서원이 반드시 필요하였다. 이러한 양자의 이해관계 속에서 이 시기 서원·사우가 폭발적으로 남설되어 나갔다. 구강서원과 반구서원은 이러한 사회적 분위기 속에서 일향사림의 공동 협력에 의해 건립된 서원이다. 서원건립은 일차적으로 강학이 목적이었지만 사현(祀賢)의 기능도 있었다. 따라서 서원이 건립되기 위해서는 제향 할 만한 인물이 있어야 한다. 제향인은 서원 소재지와 관련이 있는 인물이어야 하고, 또 그 자격기준으로 원래는 ‘반드시 학문이 깊고 사문(斯文)에 공이 있는 자’라야만 가능하였다. 그러나 울산과 언양에서는 본 읍 출신으로 서원에 배향할 만한 마땅한 유현 (儒賢)이 아직 없었다. 이에 구강서원은 울산 출신이 아닌 인근 영천·경주 출신의 정몽주)·이언적 두 유현을 각각 “정몽주는 속현(屬縣) 언양에 2년여 간 적거(謫居)하였고, 이언적은 이웃에 거주하면서 끼친 유화(儒化)가 크다”는 연고를 들어 건립하였다. 이어 언양에서도 같은 이유로 정몽주와 이언적을 그리고 구강서원과 동일인물을 첩설한다는 혐의를 피하기 위하여 정구를 추가하여 반구서원을 건립하였다. 이렇게 볼 때 구강서원과 반구서원은 정몽주가 아니었으면 당시에는 건립될 수 없었던 서원이었다. 본고에서는 구강서원과 반구서원에 제향인으로 선정된 정몽주의 언양 적거와 관련된 내용 및 두 서원이 건립될 수 있었던 사회적 배경과 설립과정을 정리하 였다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to examine Ulsan Gugang Seowon and Eonyang Bangu Seowon among several seowon to enshrine and worship Jeong Mong-ju. As seowon were the primary base to collect Hyangchon Sarim’s general opinions, their roles increased after the mid-17th century when factional politics genuinely began. Moreover, in the process of developing fractional politics, Hyangchon Sarim needed seowon to be associated with the central political power to avoid isolation and also as the base to carry out their country activities. Within such interests of the two parties, seowon․sawoo came to be founded explosively and abusively then. Gugang Seowon and Bangu Seowon were seowon founded through Ilhyang Sarim’s cooperation within that social atmosphere. Founding seowon was primarily for studying and secondarily for Sahyeon (祀賢) as well. Therefore, to found seowon, there had to be a figure to hold a memorial service for and worship. The person to be enshrined and worshiped should be associated with the location of the seowon, and about their qualifications, originally, ‘one had to be well-learned and have made contributions to Confucianism. But in Ulsan and Eonyang, there was yet no Yuhyeon (儒賢) who was from the town and could be enshrined and worshiped in the seowon reasonably. As a matter of fact, founding Gugang Seowon, they selected two Yuhyeon, Jeong Mong-ju and Lee Eon-jeok, not from Ulsan but from close regions, Yeongcheon and Gyeongju, saying, “Jeong Mong-ju was in exile to Sokhyeon (屬縣) Eonyang for two years, and Lee Eon-jeok contributed to Yuhwa (儒化) significantly while staying there as a neighbor.” After that, in Eonyang, too, coming up with the same reasons, they founded Bangu Seowon adding Jeonggu in order to avoid any suspicion that the seowon were built for the overlapped worshiping of Jeong Mong-ju, Lee Eon-jeok, and the same person of Gugang Seowon. In this sense, Gugang Seowon and Bangu Seowon could not have been built then but for Mong-ju. This study will organize the contents about the exile of Jeong Mong-ju, a person to be enshrined and worshiped in Gugang Seowon and Bangu Seowon, to Eonyang and also the social background and process of founding the two seowon.
