영문 초록

This article examines the Ehagaki, picture postcards, issued in commemoration of Korea-Japan Annexation. By introducing 400 postcards related to the historical event of Korea-Japan Annexation, I argue that these postcards contributed to the rationalization of annexation as a natural and inevitable process for Koreans. For this purpose, I categorize these 400 postcards into 9 types and lay out the visual patterns of rationalization. Considering that Ehagaki was a medium of mass communication in Japanese society, the circulation of postcards shows that many Japanese uncritically accepted the distorted view of Korea-Japan Annexation. This behavior continued with the issuance of various promotional Ehagaki and set the stage for forgetting the annexation’s invasiveness.
