국문 초록

이 글은 『염불보권문』에 관한 본격적인 연구의 일환으로, 『염불보권문』의 성격과 시대적 의미에 대해 살펴보았다. 『염불보권문』은 수록된 글들의 출전 및 내용에 따라 , 제 1부 경전에서 뽑은 글, 제 2부 예념미타도량참법 소재 왕생담 , 제 3부 염불의식문, 제 4부 보유편으로 구성되어 있다. 보유편을 제외한, 『염불보권문』은 ‘ 염불 ’의 측면에서 본다면, ‘ 염불의 이유 (제 1부) → 염 불의 이익(제 2 부) → 염불의 실천 (제 3부)’ 이라는 비교적 논리적인 전개 양상을 보인다. 제 1 · 2 부는 각각 ‘ 부처님의 말씀 ’ · ‘ 왕생의 실례 ’를 근거로 , 왕생과 성불을 염불의 이유· 이익으로 제시하고 있으며, 제 3 부는 의식의 절차라는 행위를 통해 왕생·성불에 대 한 희구 및 다짐을 드러내고 있다. 그리고 각 부분의 끝에는 왕생· 성불과 이에 대한 믿음을 강조하는 글들을 반복 배치함으로써 『염불보권문』 전체의 주제의식을 선명하게 부각시키고 있다. 『염불보권문』은 염불을 해야 하는 이유가 ‘ 왕생 ’ 과 ‘ 성불 ’ 에 있음을 보여주는 동시에 , ‘ 왕생 ’과 ‘ 성불 ’ 을 위해 염불을 해야 함을 강조하고 있는 것이다 . 특히, 『염불보권문』의 ‘ 염불 ’이 ‘ 칭명염불 ’ 만을 가리키고 있는 점과, 성불에 보다 강조점을 두고 있는 점은 이 책의 특징적인 국면이라 할 수 있다. 이러한 특징은 ‘ 유심정토 ’와 ‘ 관념염불 ’ 을 강조하는 기존의 ‘ 염불선 ’적 경향에 대한 대안이자 , 일종의 ‘ 염불운동 ’ 을 지향한 것으로 볼 수 있다. 그리고 이와 같은 새로운 움직임은 19 세기 염불결사의 성행과 왕생류 불교가사의 유행을 통해, 당시 불교계에 큰 반향을 일으켰음을 알 수 있는데, 『염불보권문』이 18 세기의 한 세기 동안 7차례나 판각 되었다는 사실 자체가 이를 보여주는 것이다. 결국, 염불보권문 은 17 세기 전반 삼문수업의 정립 이후, 기존의 염불선적 경향에 대한 대안으로 전개되었던 새로운 염불운동을 제창 내지 선도한 시대적 의미를 갖는다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Yombulbogwonmun( 念佛普勸文 ) is composed of four parts; collected texts from Buddhist scriptures, stories about the rebirth in the Pure Land that are selected from Yenyommitatoryangchambop( 禮念彌陀道場懺法 ), ritual procedure of chanting Amitabha’s name, and lastly, supplementary parts. As the arrange suggests, this book shows relatively logical development of contents from the reason of chanting Amitabha’s name, to the profit of the chanting practice, and to the practice manual of chanting Amitabha’s name. except for the supplement. The first part based on the words of the Buddha gives the reason for calling Amitabha’s name. The second part that provides the examples of those who went to the Pure Land shows the profit of the practice, that is, the rebirth in the Pure land and becoming a Buddha. The third part reveals the actual procedure to attain the goal of the chanting practice. At the end of each section, I repeat the articles emphasizing the faith of rebirth in the Pure land and becoming a Buddha, so that the subject of the entire Yombulbogwonmun( 念佛普勸文 ) is clearly highlighted. Yombulbogwonmun( 念佛普勸文 ) emphasizes the need to chant Amitabha’s name for rebirth in the Pure land and becoming a Buddha while showing the reasons for rebirth in the Pure land and becoming a Buddha. In particular, the emphasis on becoming a Buddha is a notable characteristic of this book. Yombulbogwonmun( 念佛普勸文 ) can be said to have meanings of the times. It led and advocated a new religious movement that had been developed since the 17th century, emphasizing chanting Amitabha’s name and becoming a Buddha. It also pointed out that becoming a Buddha reminds us of the essence of the faith of Pure Land and the purpose of Buddhism.
