불교 업보윤회설의 의의와 해석

국문 초록

불교의 업보윤회설은 흔히 신비주의적 개념으로 이해되어 왔다. 하지만 업보윤회설은 불교적 세계관 및 인생관의 바탕이 되는 교설로서 현대사회에서도 여전히 그 의의가 크다. 뿐만 아니라 그것은 몇 가지 새로운 관점에서 해석해 볼 여지가 있다. 이에 대한 고찰의 결과, 본고에서는 다음과 같은 잠정적 결론에 도달하게 되었다. 첫째, 불교의 업설과 윤회설은 인간의 운명은 신의 뜻이나 숙명 또는 우연이 아니라 인간의 행위(karma)로 말미암은 것임을 강조함으로써 우리로 하여금 올바른 삶을 살아가게 한다. 인간의 귀천 역시 오직 인간의 행위에 의해 규정된다고 하는 바, 이것은 곧 인간 평등의 원리적 토대가 된다고 할 것이다. 또한 불교의 업보윤회설은 오늘날 민주주의 사회에서 반드시 요청되는 시민정신인 ‘자유와 책임’ ‘권리와 의무’를 가르친다. 둘째, 불교의 업설은 개인적인 不共業뿐만 아니라 사회적인 共業을 강조함으로써 참여민주주의에 대한 이론적 지지대 역할을 한다. 특히 공업은 자연환경까지를 규정한다고 하는 바, 오늘날 환경 위기에 대한 인간의 공동의 노력은 물론, 그 무엇도 쉽게 체념하지 않는 도전 정신을 일깨운다. 셋째, 불교 업설은 근본적으로 인간의 선의지를 강조하는 윤리적 동기론의 입장에서 있지만, 결과론적 윤리 사상도 함께 포함하는 것으로 추정된다. 이는 글로벌 리스크 사회에 유용하게 활용될 것으로 보인다. 넷째 , 불교 업설은 단선[개인]적 차원뿐 아니라, 평면[사회]적 차원, 그리고 공간[심리]적 차원에서도 해석이 가능하다고 생각된다. 앞으로는 심리적 인과응보에 대한 체계적인 연구가 요청된다.

영문 초록

Buddhism’s Karma theory often has been understood as a mystical concept. However, the karma-theory as an underlying teaching of the Buddhist outlook and philosophy is still very significant in modern society. Also there is a room for the interpretation of the new perspectives. The following tentative conclusion have been reached as the result of this study. First, in the Buddhist theory of Karma and transmigration, the human fate is not decided by the will of the gods, destiny or coincidence. However, the human actions are emphasized in the theory of Karma and trans migration, which lead us a correct and up standing life. The high and low of human experience are defined by the result of human action. So the Buddhist theory of Karma and transmigration can be the principal basis of human equality. Also the theory teaches ‘freedom and responsibility’ and this is the spirit of citizenship which is required in modern democratic society. Second, Buddhist theory of karma, which emphasizes the collective karma as well as the individual karma, serves as a theoretical support for a participatory democracy. In particular, the collective karma that regulates the natural environment not only evokes the common effort to solve the environmental crisis but also awakens the spirit of undaunted challenge. Third, the karma theory of Buddhism emphasizes the fundamental ethical line of human motivation based on the good will, but it also reflects the result of actions. Accordingly, it will serve useful in the global risk society. Fourth, the Buddhist theory of karma can be interpreted in terms of individual, social, and psychological dimensions. In this context, more attention should be paid to the aspect of psychological causality in the future.
