초기불교 문헌에 나타나는 깨달음의 다원적 양상

국문 초록

불교가 추구하는 목적은 ‘ 깨달음의 성취 ’를 통해 고통의 문제를 해결하는데 있다. 결국 깨달음이란 고통을 해결하는 궁극적인 방법인 것이다. 하지만 사람마다 세상을 바라보는 시각이 다르고, 삶에서 마주하는 고통의 내용도 같지 않다. 그렇기에 깨달음 또한 다양한 방식으로 표현될 수 있다 . 이것이 바로 깨달음의 다원적 양상을 말할 수 있는 이유이다. 일반적으로 깨달음을 논할 때 bodhi 라는 말을 주로 사용하는데 , ‘ 깨달음 (bodhi)’ 이라는 용어만을 대상으로 하면 그 범위가 너무 좁아진다. 해탈, 열반 , 불사, 번뇌의 완전한 소멸 , 삼명의 획득, 재생이 없다는 선언 등이 포함되어야 한다. 그럴 때, 깨달음의 다양한 양상을 살펴볼 수 있을 것이다. 깨달음의 다양한 양상을 살펴보기 위해 , 먼저 사과설을 중심으로 깨달음의 내용을 고찰하였다. 결과 예류와 일래의 깨달음은 ‘ 믿음의 성취 ’를 특징으로 하고, 불환은 믿음의 성취를 기반으로 한 욕탐과 분노의 부정적 정서로부터의 해탈을 깨달음으로 정리하였다 . 그리고 마지막으로 아라한은 자아관념을 완전히 제거하고, 무명을 밝혀 완전지를 통해 해탈한 자이며, 완전한 번뇌의 소멸을 통해 태어남을 파괴한 자이다. 따라서 무아의 체득과 번뇌의 완전한 소멸에 대한 앎으로 깨달음을 정리해 보았다. 다음으로 운문경전 가운데 테라가타와 테리가타 그리고 Sagathavagga에 나타나는 깨달음에 대한 내용을 몇 가지 범주로 나누어 고찰해 보았다. 우선 테라가타와 테리가타는 깨달음의 선언 혹은 표현을 3가지로 정리했고, 깨달음을 획득한 방법과 기연성을 특징으로 기술해 보았다. 결론적으로 초기불교 문헌, 특히 니까야속에서 발견되는 깨달음의 양상은 과정으로서의 깨달음은 믿음을 그 특징으로 하고, 궁극적 깨달음은 번뇌의 소멸과 재생의 단절 및 태어남의 파괴로 정리될 수 있을 것 같다.

영문 초록

The goal of Buddhism is to resolve pains through the attainment of awakening. Each person has a different view on the world, and the pain that he or she encounters in his or her life may differ. As a result, awakening may be expressed in diverse ways. For this reason, one can say that awakening has pluralist aspects. Generally, we mainly use the term ‘bodhi’ for enlightenment. But, if we use the term ‘bodhi’ only for enlightenment, the scope of the term becomes too narrow. When following concepts such as liberation, extinction, immortality, extinction of defilements, acquisition of ti-vijjā, and a declaration of no rebirth are considered together, then, it becomes possible to examine the full spectrum of the diverse aspects of awakening. In order to explore the diverse aspects of awakening, the content of awakening must be examined focused on the four realizations. The result was that the awakenings of sotāpanna and sakadāgāmin were characterized by an achievement of faith. The awakening of ānāgāmin was based on a liberation from negative emotions, which was based on the achievement of faith. Lastly, arahat is the being who removes the concept of ego completely and enlightens the ignorance to gain perfect wisdom and to be liberated at the same time, and who destroys the cycle of rebirth through the extinction of defilements. Therefore, this study defined awakening as the achievement of non-self and an awareness of the complete extinction of defilements. Next, this study divided the contents of awakening in Theragāthā, Therīgāthā, and Sagāthāvaggaand into a few categories and examined separately. In Theragāthā and Therīgāthā, the declaration or expressions of awakening appeared in three distinct ways. This study also described the characteristics of the method and opportunity in spiritual awakening. In conclusion, the aspect of awakening in Nikāyas is that awakening as a process is characterized by faith and that the ultimate awakening is attained by the extinction of defilement, a severance of regeneration, and a destruction of birth .
