근대 ‘미신론’과 여성의 문제

국문 초록

일제강점기에 대두된 ‘미신론’에서, 여성은 미신 전승의 주체로 비판의 대상이 되었다. 본고는 당시의 신문매체에 드러난 미신론을 바탕으로 민간신앙의 주체인 여성이 어떻게 비판받고 있으며, 여성을 대상으로 한 미신타파운동이 어떠한 방식으로 전개되었는지에 주목하였다. 일본 정부는 물론 언론에 의해 전통 민간신앙은 부정되었으며, 특히 근대 교육을 접하지 못한 구여성은 미신과 동일시되었다. 여성은 임신과 출산을 경험하는 과정에서 관련 속신의 전승자였다. 또한 구여성이 꾸려가는 한국의 가정은 ‘구식가정’으로 지칭되었고, 신여성마저도 미신을 행한다 하여 비판받았다. 신문매체는 여성 미신의 문제를 해결하고자 여성교양교육 강좌를 개최하고, 그 내용을 연재하면서 구여성의 계도를 도모하였다. 이미 한국인의 생활양식으로 굳어진 민간신앙 행위를 비판하는 과정에서 일상생활마저도 규제의 대상이 될 수밖에 없었고, 끊임없이 ‘구식가정’의 변화를 촉구하였다. 그러나 미신 타파운동이 실제적으로 여성의 삶에 관여하여 ‘전근대적’인 종교성으로부터 탈피하도록 독려하고 근대로 진입할 수 있는 한 방법이 되기에는 역부족이었던 것으로 보인다.

영문 초록

Women were criticized as successors of folk-beliefsin ‘Misinron(Discourse on Superstition)’ during the Japanese colonial rule. The study, based on Misinron, focused on the aspects of criticism toward women as subjects of the transmission of folk-beliefs and how Misintapaundong(Superstition Break-down Movement)developed. Traditional folk-beliefs were denied by the media as well as by Japanese government and in particular, old fashioned women, who weren’t exposed to modern education, were identified with superstition with a result of being negatively portrayed. Women became successors of superstition in the process of pregnancy and delivery. Joseon families run by old-fashioned women were referred to as ‘old-fashioned family’ and even new women were accused of conducting superstition. In order to solve the problems, the media conducted liberal education for women and serially published the articles on it. The criticism of folk beliefs deep rooted as a tradition always of living led to regulating everyday life and urging change in the family. However, the superstition break-down movement was insufficient to be a path to modernization that encouraged women out of pre-modern faith through engaging in their life.
