국문 초록

아산 정주영은 한국의 대표적인 기업가이다. 그는 어린 시절 유학경전을 학습하였을 뿐만 아니라 기업을 운영하면서도 유학정신의 중요성을 자주 언급하였다. 그는 기업을 운영하면서 유학의 공동체 의식과 서구의 개인주의 시장경제를 결합하려는 노력을 엿볼 수 있다. 논문에서는 그의 이러한 기업경영의 특성을 ‘I-We형’ 경영기업으로 칭하였다. 그의 ‘I-we형’ 기업경영의 특징은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 아산은 서구의 시장경제를 수용해 기업경영의 합리성과 효율성을 높이고자 하였고, 기업의 조직운영에서는 유학의 상호보완적인 공동체 의식을 강조하였다. 둘째, 그는 국가주도적 기업경영을 비판하면서, 기업의 자율성과 창의성을 강조하는 민간기업주의를 주장하였다. 그러나 그는 기업의 궁극적인 목적을 기업의 발전이 아니라 국가의 발전에 두었다. 그의 국가 발전을 위한 기업경영에는 유학의 공동체 의식이 반영되어 있다. 그래서 그는 ‘보국주의(報國主義)’를 경영목표로 삼고, 민간기업주의를 경영전략으로 삼으면서 양자를 결합하고자 하였다. 셋째, 아산은 분업과 경쟁을 중시한다. 그러나 기업경영에서 분업과 경쟁은 개인과 개인, 집단과 집단 간의 갈등을 초래하면서 효율성을 저하시킬 수 있다. 아산은 이러한 기업경영의 한계성을 극복하기 위해 유학의 화(Harmony) 가치관을 중시하였다. 이와 같이 그는 기업경영에 있어서도 기업 구성원이 각자의 직분(본분)을 다하면서 조화를 이룰 수 있도록 노력하였다. 넷째, 아산은 시장경제의 효율성과 합리성을 인정하면서도 유학윤리를 중시하였다. 그는 유학사상은 한국인의 정서에 부합할 뿐만 아니라 기업의 경영윤리에 적응할 수 있는 사상적 자원을 포함하고 있다고 보았다. 그래서 그는 시장경제에서 유학의 경제윤리를 적용하면서 새로운 기업경영 모형을 구축하고자 하였다.

영문 초록

Asan is one of Korea’s best known businessmen. He read Confucian scriptures when he was young and frequently mentioned the importance of Confucian spirits during his business activities. That is why it is easy to spot Confucian virtues in the way he operates his company. In fact, Asan accepted the western individualistic market economy, while succeeding the communal spirit of Confucianism while managing his company. That is why we can call his corporate management as ‘I-We Type’ management. The features of his ‘I-We Type’ corporate management are as follows. First, Asan aimed at accepting the market economy of the west and enhance the feasibility and efficiency of corporate management. However, he emphasized mutually supportive communalism of Confucianism in the operation of the company’s organizations. Thus, the features of his corporate management can be defined as a combination of western methods and Confucianism. Second, he criticized government-led corporate management and championed private entrepreneurship that stressed the freedom and creativity of companies. However, Asan also stressed the national outlook of Confucianism placing the ultimate goal of corporate activities in national development. Thus, he placed ‘patriotism’ as his management goal and used private entrepreneurship as his management strategy to combine the two. Third, Asan stressed division of labor and competition for corporate development. However, he believed that division of labor and competition would lead to conflicts between individuals and between groups, and thus reduce efficiency. Therefore, he succeeded the Confucian idea of harmony and had the members of various organizations work for the same goal. Fourth, Asan recognized the efficiency and feasibility of market economy and tried to establish economic ethics. For this, Asan focused on Confucian ethics. Confucian ethics not only fit the sentiments of Koreans, but also contains organizational order, economic ethics, and values. That is why he attempted to create a new corporate management model that combined market economies and the economic ethics of Confucianism.
