충의공(忠毅公) 정기룡(鄭起龍)의 리더십

국문 초록

임진왜란을 극복한 인물 중에 가장 큰 공을 세운 인물로 흔히 바다에서는 이순신을, 육지에서는 정기룡을 꼽는 데 주저하지 않는다. 정기룡은 임진왜란이 발발한 순간부터 끝날 때까지 일본군을 물리치는 데 혼신의 노력을 다한 무장이다. 이러한 정기룡의 리더십은 당대의 명장 이순신의 경우와 유사한 면이 많다. 따라서 정기룡의 리더십을 보다 입체적으로 드러내기 위해 부분적으로 이순신의 리더십과 비교해서 살펴보았다. 정기룡의 리더십 형성과정을 살펴보면 그는 어릴 때부터 무인으로서의 기질과 능력을 타고난 가운데 가풍(家風)의 영향으로 충효사상에도 투철하였다. 그리고 성장과정에서 전쟁놀이를 통해 무인의 꿈을 키워나가면서 활쏘기와 말타기 등의 무예의 기본 종목을 터득하였다. 와중에 부친과 형의 죽음을 접하면서 불굴의 정신력을 발휘한 면도 그의 리더로서의 능력 함양에 기여하였다고 본다. 이렇게 성장과정에서 터득한 그의 지휘통솔능력은 전쟁을 맞아 십분 발휘되었다. 그는 임진왜란 초기 거창현의 신창 전투를 시작으로 수많은 전투에 참가하여 한 번도 패하지 않은 큰 업적을 남겼다. 그의 전투사례와 행적을 살펴볼 때 그의 리더십 특성은 크게 3가지로 분류할 수 있다. 첫째는 뛰어난 전기(戰技)로 선봉에서 솔선수범하였다는 점, 둘째는 부하와 백성을 지극히 사랑하였다는 점, 셋째는 명군과 화합하여 효율적인 연합작전을 수행하였다는 점을 들 수 있다. 이러한 리더십은 당대의 최고 명장이라 부르는 이순신의 리더십과 비교하여 보았을 때 서로 유사한 점도 확인할 수 있다. 임진왜란 때 많은 전공을 세운 정기룡의 리더십에 대해 당대와 후대의 많은 인물들이 높게 평가하였다. 특히 당대 명군 지휘부에서는 선조임금에게 몇 차례나 강조하면서 정기룡의 리더십을 극찬하였다. 당대의 명재상이었던 류성룡 또한 정기룡의 리더십을 매우 높게 평가하였다. 조선 후기에도 조선 조정에서는 그의 임진왜란 때 전공을 높게 인식하고 있음을 확인할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Among the many generals who overcame Imjinwaeran, Yi Sun-sin is commonly regarded as a sea-hero and Jeong Gi-ryong is regarded by the majority of people to be the best general on land. He committed himself, body and soul, to fighting against the Japanese from the outbreak of war to the end. The leadership of Jeong Gi-ryong is similar to that of Yi Sun-sin, the greatest commander of the age. Therefore, I partially compared the leadership of Jeong Gi-ryong with that of Yi Sun-sin so as to reveal Jeong’s leadership in a multidirectional aspect. If you look at the formation process of his leadership, he was endowed with a military spirit and ability in his earliest days and his thoughts of loyalty and filial piety had become strong since his childhood thanks to his family tradition. As he grew up, he dreamed of becoming a soldier by playing war games and acquiring military arts and skills such as archery and horsemanship. His indomitable spirit shown during his father’s and brother’s funerals contributed in developing his ability as a leader. The leadership acquired during his growth was demonstrated in the war. He participated in many battles starting with the Sinchang battle in Geochang. He had never lost any battles and had achieved the defeat of the enemies. According to his battle cases and achievements, the characteristics of his leadership can be distinguished in three categories. First, he took the initiative and set an example by spearheading an attack. Second, he loved his men and the people deeply. Third, he led the effective combined operations with Ming Army. These features show us the similarity to the leadership of Yi Sun-sin, the greatest commander of the age. The leadership of Jeong Gi-ryong who distinguished himself in war has been highly appreciated by the contemporaries and posterity. Especially, the command group of the Ming Army spoke highly of his leadership to King Seonjo several times. Yu Seong-ryong, a great scholar-official of the Joseon Dynasty, also praised Jeong’s leadership highly. The Dynasty of late Joseon recognized his military merit during Imjinwaeran as well.
