이순신 정론Ⅰ

국문 초록

이순신 정론을 확립하기 위해서는 기존의 다양한 주장에 대한 검토가 필요하다. 필자가 검토한 주제는 3가지로, 해전횟수, 면사첩, 백의종군에 관해서이다. 먼저 해전횟수에 대해 검토한 결과 기존의 주장들은 해전 개념에 대한 명확한 정의 없이 자의적으로 주장하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 특히 드라마 ‘불멸의 이순신’을 통해 전국으로 확산된 ‘23전 23승’이라는 일반적 주장은 더욱더 그 근거가 맞지 않음을 확인할 수 있었다. 해전횟수는 아직 완벽하게 정리할 수 있는 상황이라고 볼 수 없다. 임진왜란 전체 해전에 대해 완벽하게 파악하지 못하고 있기 때문에 진행형이라고 표현할 수 있기 때문이다. 그리고 해전의 범위에 대한 명확한 개념정립이 이루어지지 못한 상황이기도 하다. 따라서 필자는 기존에 밝혀진 해전에 한해 대표해전과 세부해전으로 구분하였고, 세부해전의 횟수를 이순신 참가해전으로 간주하였다. 그럴 경우 45회의 세부해전에 이순신이 참가했고 한 번도 패하지 않았다고 잠정 결론을 내리고자 한다. 두 번째로 최근 이순신 관련 드라마나 저작물들에서 발견되는 조선시대 면사첩제도에 관한 오류를 바로잡기 위해 면사첩 관련 사료들을 검토하여 소개하는 장을 마련하였다. 면사첩은 조선에서 독자적으로 만들어 시행한 제도가 아니라 임진왜란 중 명나라로부터 도입된 제도이다. 아울러 소설과 드라마를 통해 잘못 알려진 이순신이 면사첩을 받은 이유에 대해서 명확히 이해할 수 있게 되었다. 이순신이 면사첩을 받은 것은 이순신 본인을 대상으로 한 것이 아니라 적에게 어쩔 수 없이 협조한 사실이 있는 사람들을 이순신더러 구제하라고 명의 경리 양호가 보낸 것이었다. 마지막으로 살펴본 백의종군은 조선시대 초기에 이미 적용했던 형벌의 일종으로서 장형(杖刑)을 집행한 다음 ‘관작(官爵)과 보직 없이 충군(充軍)하는 것’이라고 정의할 수 있었다. 아울러 이 형벌은 적어도 과거에 급제한 인물들 이상에게만 적용되던 것이었다. 한편으로 조선시대 백의종군 사례들을 살펴보면 주로 전쟁이 일어났을 때 적을 막지 않고 도주하거나 패한 경우 적용한 사례가 가장 많았음을 알 수 있다. 평소에는 중형을 집행해야 하지만 임진왜란 시기와 같은 위기상황에서 적을 맞아 싸울 장수가 부족한 현실을 감안하여 전공을 세워 죄를 갚으라는 의미로 부과된 비교적 가벼운 형벌로 볼 수 있다. 이순신의 경우 첫 번째 백의종군 중일 때는 시전부락 전투에 우화열장이란 전투 편제로 참전하여 공을 세웠다. 두 번째 백의종군 중일 때도 이순신은 백의종군 여정에서 전관예우를 톡톡히 받았다. 아울러 백의종군 중일 때 이순신의 역할은 전쟁지휘부의 군사자문 역할과 둔전 경영, 그리고 수군상황 파악이었다. 이것은 결코 낮은 신분으로서는 행할 수 없는 일이었다.

영문 초록

Establishing broadly accurate thesis on Admiral, Yi Sun Sin, there should come to study the previous theories. Which I examined again is 3 themes; The numbers of naval battles in the Imjin war, Death excemption card[免死帖], and Serving with no rank in the army[白衣從軍]. First, I could emphasis on The numbers of naval battles in the Imjin war is there had not been correct definitions on each naval battle which the most previous studies. Yi’s 23victory battles of none to be defeated is know to most Korean population by the TV drama, ‘Immortal Admiral, Yi’, however, there is hard to agree on his 23 victories. Still it is hard to define even the sum of naval battles Yi faced. Furthermore, there still do not have extent of each naval battle. Thereupon, I would like to classify the naval battles macroscopically and microscopically. I hypothesized the microscopic battles to Yi faced. With this hypothesis, I would conclude that Yi took in 45 times microscopic battles and he had never defeated after all. My second point is again from some TV works have made stories about Death exemption card[免死帖] system. Death excemption card[免死帖] is not the system originated in Joseon but the system is brought from Ming, China assisting the Imjin War. The only one reason how Yi got the document is the document is not directed Yi himself, but the Ming, China general Yang Ho sent the document to Yi to save the citizens pro-enemied. Thus, we could fully clear the incorrect sources of materials released about Yi connected on getting the Death exemption card[免死帖]. Finally, serving with no rank in army[白衣從軍] system is a punishment applied during the early Joseon era. This punishment is firstly conducted the bastinado and send back him to camps with no official position. At least, this punishment is applied to one who had passed the national examinations. However, it is known that this demotion system is targeted mostly to the bureaucrats who ran away while not defending the enemy. Yi’s first serving with no rank in army[白衣從軍], he distinguished on a such small village battles taking a part in a low graded solider. On his second serving small with no rank in the army[白衣從軍] case he also did some work distinguished in battles that he was on advisory on battles, cultivated the garrison farms, and practised the naval troop’s works. It can easily tell the works had been done during the serving with no rank in the army [白衣從軍], period was a low class bureaucrat was hard to cough.
