조선시대 백의종군 사례와 이순신의 백의종군

국문 초록

백의종군은 이순신의 대명사로 쓰여지고 있는 용어 중 하나이다. 그런데 이 용어가 정확하게 어떤 의미인지는 모른 채 사용하고 있는 실정이다. 심지어 백의종군 중일 때 이순신의 신분을 졸병으로 간주하기도 한다. 한편으로 이순신의 행적을 닮겠다는 의미로 백의종군을 자청하여 조직의 말단으로 돌아가 사심 없이 근무하겠다는 의지를 나타내기도 한다. 본 연구를 통해 살펴본 결과 백의종군은 조선시대 관료에게 주어진 형벌의 일종이었다. 다시 말해 관작(官爵)과 보직 없이 충군(充軍)하는 것을 의미하였다. 조선시대 백의종군 사례를 살펴보면 주로 임진왜란 시기에 백의종군을 당한 경우가 많이 발견된다. 즉 전쟁이 일어났을 때 해당지역의 지휘관이나 행정조직의 책임자가 적을 제대로 막지 못했거나 패한 경우, 싸우지 않고 도망한 경우, 또는 다른 군대를 구원하지 않았을 경우에서 비롯되었다. 다시 말해 이러한 행위를 초래한 자에게는 중한 형벌을 내려야 함이 마땅하였지만, 나라가 존망의 위기 상황에서 인재가 부족한 현실을 감안해야 했다. 따라서 이들에게 공을 세우도록 하여 전쟁을 극복할 수 있는 기회를 부여하자는 취지에서 중한 형벌 대신 부과한 제도가 바로 백의종군이다. 이순신의 백의종군도 이러한 사례의 한 부분을 차지하고 있다. 이순신의 첫 번째 백의종 군은 녹둔도전투에서 패전한 결과로 중형을 선고 받을 뻔 했지만, 북쪽 변방의 혼란과 유능한 장수가 부족한 상황이 고려되어 백의종군으로 감형된 것이다. 두 번째 백의종군은 임금의 오판에 따라 사형에 처하게 된 위기상황에서 정유재란기의 전황이 무겁게 흘러감에 따라 명장에게 중형을 선고할 수 없다는 인식 하에 백의종군으로 감형되었던 것이다. 이순신이 백의종군 중일 때 신분은 결코 하위 군졸에 해당되는 것이 아니었다. 이순신이첫 번째 백의종군 때는 ‘우화열장(右火烈將)’이라는 상위의 전투 편제로 시전부락 전투에 참가하여 전공을 세웠다. 두 번째 백의종군 때에는 전쟁지휘부의 군사자문 역할을 하거나 둔전을 경영하는 한편, 수군 상황에 대한 지속적인 파악 활동을 하였다. 이렇게 볼 때 이순신이 백의종군 중일 때는 결코 하급 군졸의 신분이 아니라 보직과 관작만 없었을 뿐 하는 일은 전 관직 때의 신분과 다를 바 없을 정도의 중요한 임무를 맡아서 했던 것이다. 특히 두 번째 백의종군 중일 때 이순신은 수군 상황 파악에 조금도 게을리 하지 않았다. 그러한 자세를 견지한 결과 수군통제사로 복직되었을 때 이미 수군 현황이 파악된 상태에서 수군재건이 용이하게 이루어질 수 있었고, 나아가 명량해전의 큰 승리도 이룰 수 있었다.

영문 초록

Mentioning on the great commender, Yi Sun-sin, Downfall to the Humble in a war which can be half of his, always comes with. However, it is regretful that the word, Downfall to the Humble in a war is in use unconsciously. A person who adopts the word, Downfall to the Humble in a war does not know the meaning at all in addition. Even it is in use to substitute of Yi s state during Downfall to the Humble in the war to a private. Some show their wills volunteering as Downfall to the Humble to be back to the very first position at work while abandoning his/her current rich state not to be sophisticated meanwhile. According to my research on this, I have found out that Downfall to the Humble in wars is one of punishments to bureaucrats during Joseon era. In other words, he had to be in service with neither governmental nor appointed positions and work for the loyalty to his sovereign. There are the cases of Downfall to the Humble in the Joseon dynasty, and are found during the Imjin war mostly. Downfall to the Humble in a war originated from as a war occurred, if a commender and a person who is an administration service in charge failed to do his duty against the enemy, and also if he did not cooperate our army allied in time. In other words, he who had caused those acts had to get a stern punishment, however, it should be considered the situation that the country at a critical juncture is in the matter of life and death, furthermore, the human resources who could cough at the battles were in an absolute insufficiency. So, Downfall to the Humble was a system for those who had committed those serious accusations, and showed them a way to come over the war by distinguishing at battles. Yi Sun-sin s first Downfall to the Humble was resulted from the failure of the Nokdundo battle, and he was about to be punished for serious sins, however, there were much insufficiency of compensable generals at the border of northern states, henceforth, Yi was on Downfall to the Humble. The second Downfall to the Humble of Yi s was due to King Sonjo s impetuous judgment. There was a serious accusation punishable by death awaiting, however, the critical juncture of JeongyuJaeran (the second Imjin War) saved such a great commander not to have a stern punishment so that Yi was left where he was and had Downfall to the Humble.Yi Sun-sin s social state during Downfall to the Humble had never been in a private. He achieved an excellent exploit as the head of the van at a formation (WoohwaYeoljang, 右火烈將) at a mere farming village on his Downfall to the Humble period. During his second Downfall to the Humble in the war, he cultivated the farms for garrisons and did an army advisory on the one hand he continued seizing what the Joseon navy was doing on. Observing all those, while being in a Downfall to the Humble, he had never been any private but also had any social state at all, however, the works he was doing were exactly as important as what he had been doing previously. Notably, Yi Sun-sin was very much keen on what the navy force are going on during his second Downfall to the Humble. Keeping a keen sight for the navy force, reinforcing the navy force was successful afterwards since he was reinstated to Joseon s Supreme Naval Commander, and also could have a glorious victory at MyongNyang naval battle.
