국문 초록

이 글은 전쟁의 촉발 요인에 대한 스테판 반 이브라(Stephen Van Evera)의 ‘전쟁 원인효과(War-causing effects)’를 토대로 1419년(세종 1년) 조선이 대마도 정벌을 결심하게 된 원인에 대해 이론적 설명을 제시하고 있다. ‘전쟁 원인 효과’는 위협과 취약성, 외교적 노력의 한계, 전쟁 승리의 자신감 등에 대한 인식적 판단이 특정 국가로 하여금 보다 쉽게 전쟁을 결심하게 하는 것으로 설명한다. 이 글에서는 ‘전쟁 원인효과’의 주요 가설들을 1419년 조선의 상황에 적용하여, 당시 조선의 대마도 정벌 결정에 관한 주요 요인들을 추론하였 다. 즉 당시 조선은 왜구위협의 증폭과 對왜구 취약성의 재고, 외교적 對왜구 정책의 한계, 정벌의 효과와 성공 가능성에 대한 확신을 바탕으로 대마도 정벌을 결심한 것이다. 대마도 정벌에 대한 이러한 접근은 정벌의 원인과 배경을 왜구가 발생했기 때문으로 단순화했던 기존의 일반적 견해에 보다 논리적 이고 구체적인 이론적 근거를 제시할 수 있다는 점에서 연구의 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

This thesis gives an theoretical explanation of determinants of the Daemado Conquest of Joseon in 1419 based upon Stephen Van Evera s War-causing effects hypothesis that accounts for a primary factor leading to war. In War-causing effects hypothesis, the judgment on threat, diplomatic false and the likelihood of a victory of war can lead to war more easily. This thesis infers decisive factors of Joseon s determination to conqust of Daemado from applying War-causing effects hypotheses to Joseon in 1419. In other words, at that time, Joseon determined to conquest of Daemado by strengthening Waegu s threat and perception of Josoen s vulnerability against Waegu, a limit upon a diplomatic policy false to Waegu, and through being sure of an effectiveness of the conquest and a possibility of victory against Waegu in Daemado. This approach about the conquest of Daemado has value in points of being distinct from other studies about the conquest of Daemado because this apporach can infer a more logical and concrete explanation of a background and causes of that event.
