영미 근대 초등교육 형성과정에서의 청교도 역할 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 영미 근대 초등교육 형성과정에서의 청교도가 어떠한 역할을 했는지를 고찰하는데 목적이 있다. 서양교육사에 있어서 영국과 초기 미국의 경우 초등교육의 형성은 종교개혁 이후에 나타나는 시대적 상황 하의 이념적 그리고 종교적 갈등 속에서 청교도를 통해 많은 영향을 받았다. 특히 미국에서는 유럽의 가톨릭 교리와는 다른 청교도적 이념을 추구하였으며, 미국문화의 발전에 가장 큰 종교적 이념적 영향을 끼친 것은 청교도주의였다. 청교도들은 칼빈주의에 입각하여 인간이 신의 구원을 받기 위해서 교육의 필요성을 절실히 느꼈으며, 청교도인들의 교육적 노력은 결과적으로 특권층뿐만 아니라 일반 서민을 위한 학교 설립의 필요성을 인식하는 계기와 모국어에 의한 근대 초등보통교육의 기초를 마련하게 하였다. 또한 초기 미국의 경우, 전 주민의 교육세에 의한 무상교육의 주장은 하층 계급이 보다 많은 교육기회를 부요하여 누구나 동등하게 초등교육을 받아야 한다는 명분을 마련하게 했다. 따라서 영미 근대의 초등교육의 형성은 사실상 청교도인들로부터의 노력으로 시작되었다고 볼 수 있으며, 특히 일반 서민이 성경을 직접 읽을 수 있도록 노력한 것은 모국어교육뿐 아니라 공교육의 보편성에 대한 사회적 인식을 높이는 계기를 마련하게 된 데에 큰 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to discuss how educational efforts of the Puritans concretely influenced on forming elementary education in England and New England. Puritanism is undoubtedly one of the most important factors shaping England and U.S.A. culture, and it gives rise to public discussion focusing on education. Especially American history and its culture can be thoroughly understood when we admit the properties of Puritanism. In this regard, it would be meaningful for us to review how the Puritanism has affected forming modern elementary education in England and U.S.A. Because the education for children was utmost concern to parents, Puritans made strong claims regarding the duties of parents to educate their children, and recognized more seriously the necessity of elementary education to solve, the problems of baptism. To increase piety for God, a long-term strategy is necessary and they should have the common school to educate their children. Puritanism of England have exerted profound influences on forming the basis of elementary education, and Puritans have established many public schools. Even if, behind the immigration of early Puritans to America, there were Bible-based thought, and they established higher education earlier than elementary education, they also developed the elementary education on the basis of equalitarianism, so the free and compulsory schooling rendered great service to the development of education of New England and today s elementary education. Thus Puritans educational contribution was to establish the basic system and values for elementary education. Key Words : England, U.S.A., Elementary Education, Puritan
