국문 초록

이 글은 <서유록>에 나타난 노정과 글의 구성, 당시 새롭게 접하는 서구나 일본의 문물에 대한 태도, 자기재현 양상을 분석하여 강릉 김씨 부인의 문명의식과 여성의식을 살펴본 것이다. <서유록>은 강릉 김씨 부인이 1913년 강릉에서 서울로 여행한 기록으로, <경성유록>이라는 책에 <황성신문> 기사를 번역한 것과 함께 묶여 전한다. 강릉 김씨 부인은 서울 여행을 통해 일본 군대, 일본 사람들의 장사, 일본 사람들의 주택 등을 보고 분개하는 한편, 놀라워하며 문명개화가 이루어져야 한다고 주장한다. 강릉 김씨 부인은 문명개화를 위해 여성교육이 필요하다고 주장하는데 그 논리와 어조는 당당하고 적극적이다. <서유록>은 향촌 출신의 여성이 서울 여행에서의 문명 체험을 통해 문명개화의 필요성을 깨닫고, 가족의 일원에서 여자계의 한 여성, 국민의 한 사람으로 인식하는 과정을 보여준다. 강릉 김씨 부인의 이러한 적극적인 태도와 인식은 전통적인 의식에 갇혀 있는 것으로 재현되던 구여성의 타자화된 이미지를 벗어난 새로운 구여성상을 재현한 것으로 중요한 의미를 갖는다.

영문 초록

Seo-Yu-Rok西遊錄 is a travelogue of lady Kim who traveled from Gangneung to Seoul with her husband and daughter in 1913. This local lady’s record of her travel appeared in a book entitled Kyungseong-Yurok京城遊錄 where the translation of some articles of a newspaper, Capital Gazette皇城新聞 were also included. This essay tried to analyse the route of this lady’s travel, the organization of her travelogue, her thoughts on Western and Japanese civilization and her self-representation. While traveling in Seoul, she saw with her own eyes Japanese military forces and commerce, and Japanese style houses, which led her to get feeling of resentment toward these Japanese power on one hand, and needs to advance enlightenment and civilization of Korean people on the other hand. When she visited schools, she came to think the development of civilization could be realized through education. It is notable that she recorded her ideas and thoughts in a logical and confident way. It seems that her journey to Seoul gave her not just a chance to realize the necessity of enlightenment and civilization in Korea, but also the motivation to enlarge her sense of self. Through this journey, she came to realize her female identity and nation identity beyond her familial identity. These thoughts of hers seem to reflect the currents of thoughts at that times. Her thoughts and attitudes shown in her travelogue is meaningful in that it presented the new image of traditional women, which had been represented as the old-fashioned whose consciousness was limited to conventional thoughts.
